Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana Pruning Tools
« on: October 31, 2018, 08:14:51 AM »
What do some of you use to prune your banana leaves?  I've been using my hand pruners but they are hardly an optimal choice.

The post hole tamp digging bar from Harbor Freight has changed my life in regards to maintaining healthy mats.

I was wondering, is there a better way to categorize the forum so we don't get continually flooded with international threads?  It would be really cool to have a designated forum for DOMESTIC sales.  Just a thought.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Peach Tree Fungus

Anybody know what type of fungus/disease this is?  Fortunately I noticed it quick enough where it didn't do much damage to the trunk.  Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Staking Trees for Wind?
« on: September 05, 2017, 04:30:18 PM »
Should newly planted trees be staked in preparation for hurricane force winds or is it better to just let them get blown over?  I've read some conflicting information on this and was wondering if anyone has an opinion.  I was originally thinking a single stake tight to the trunk with nursery tape to secure them

I know this is unrelated to fruit and way off topic but some feedback is needed.  They appear to be growing in our new Bahia sod around the house.  Are they toxic, what kind is this?  Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mulching for New Orchard - Good or Bad?
« on: January 12, 2017, 03:11:06 PM »
We have begun installing tree trimmer mulch on our future orchard.  Everything is being spread between 1-1.5' thick.  Approximately 6500 cy of mulch is needed to cover the entire area and we currently have installed about 1600 cy.  There is a good variation as to the type and consistency of the green waste.  The existing soil is classified as Holopaw fine sand which to the eye appears void of any organic nutrients or topsoil.  There was little stratification when the excavator dug down 6'.  I figured mulch will enhance the soil with some organic material that will retain moisture, suppress weeds, add nutrients, and increase bio activity.  Mangoes will be the primary crop and production trees will be installed this summer.  I figured creating a thin layer of topsoil in the next few years will only help newly planted trees become established quicker.  I do not plan to continue mulching after the entire area has been covered.  Soil samples are going to spectrum analytics next week.

Does anyone have experience with this tactic on a larger scale?  What are the drawbacks?  Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coconut Cream Productivity?
« on: December 17, 2016, 05:31:53 PM »
Can anyone vouch for Coconut Cream's productivity at this point?  A grower from Pine Island also mentioned graft compatibility as a potential issue.  I only have one in ground at this point but it is too young to fruit.

Thanks.

I know this topic has been pretty well covered however I'm getting closer to establishing the final layout for our future orchard and wanted to get some last minute feedback from experienced home/commercial growers.

Mango tree varieties and their growth habits will vary greatly throughout the orchard.
Rows will be planted North to South 8 trees per row with 19' spacing between each tree.  The rows will be spaced 25' apart.

Are 19' diameter trees realistic for most mangoes?  Of course they will be selectively pruned annually to keep things healthy and productive.  On this parcel, if I go up to 20' x 25' spacing I'll loose 36 spaces which is significant.

Would love to hear from some experienced growers on whether 19' be sufficient or should I sacrifice greater spacing for less trees?

Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Electrostatic Foliar Backpack Sprayer
« on: October 10, 2016, 08:44:24 PM »
During a conversation with a representative from Organic Laboratories about which foliar product would be optimal for my young mango trees he asked me what application method would be used.  I informed him that I have a non motorized 5gal backpack sprayer and he straight up told me "before wasting money on product purchase a motorized mister with an electrostatic conversion kit"  He cited stihl and solo versions as good misters.  Hearing this from a rep who sells Ag products kind of drove home just how important it is to have the right equipment.

Is there anyone out there who is using electrostatic equipment?  This to me sounds like a "must have" for any foliar application.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit Looking Shabby
« on: September 13, 2016, 09:32:46 AM »
Recently I realized that my two jackfruits purchased from Excalibur (Lemon and Excal Red) were getting "wet feet" in 15gal plastic containers.  The planting mix I was using  was too heavy and anaerobic.

Subsequently, I re-potted into 15gal fabric pots with a perlite/planting mix which is significantly better.  Unfortunately the trees don't seem to be rebounding as quickly as I was hoping and are actually showing signs of deficiency (I think).  Could the tree be locked up from sitting in a wet soil?  Some leaves have fallen and the fresh nodes do not seem to be pushing.  A couple weeks ago, against my better judgment, I gave them some fert in hopes to spark some new growth but it had no affect.
