Amend the soil area now to allow for decomposition/maturation. When Spring arrives your amended soil will be primed for planting.

I vote to cut them off and let the tree rest before this winters bloom. Its getting late in the season and they probably won't reach full maturity anyhow. My 2 cents. I have a Carrie with 1 fruit left but its probably 6 in. long and nearly ready to eat...just ate one today off that tree and it was delicious. Best regards, Chris

The fruits are at maximum ripeness when they are almost black with a matte (dull no gloss) exterior. Chris

I just went and re-checked some photos of my sabara and it seems that it was fruiting last October (2015) thus making it nearly year round fruiter- minus dec. jan. and then apparently flowering/fruiting in Feb. 2016. Its hard to tell what time of year they fruit as they often times fruit most of the year here. It is even harder to tell WHEN they will fruit. I have a sabara or hybrid sabara thats 6ft tall and 3"+ diameter trunk and it has yet to flower. Its a real crap shoot. Chris

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hass & Avocado Confusion
« on: September 18, 2016, 01:20:24 AM »
I believe my neighbors house next door has one of the original has avocado trees. Their house was built in (I think) 1916 and the Hass tree in their back yard is 30ftx30ft with at least a 3ft diameter trunk...1000's of avocados on that tree. My house had one planted in the late 30's that died from root rot when the lawn was installed at some point. There are a few other Hass trees in my neighborhood that are exceptionally large that could share the same pedigree. Who knows? Its only a guess on my part since I'm not close to my Hass neighbors. The sabara is in a 20 gal. pot waiting to be put in the ground. Im redoing my home and landscaping so I gave a bunch of boxed trees and larger pots that i will be planting soon. As far as watering goes, I water all my jaboticabas every other day in the summer...every day if it gets hot. I give them espoma holytone fert, tiger 90 sulfur, and SoAG Iron...some micros here and there if I can remember. Chris

I would say my sabara is around 7-8 years old...been fruiting since last year. The tree started to produce slowly and has ramped up production exponentially in the last year. Good times. Chris

My Sabara has been fruiting non-stop since Feb. or March and should be fruiting into the upcoming holidays. My Red fruits all year for the most part, though in much smaller numbers. Chris

I'm curious to see if anyone knows if it is possible that a Sabara will fruit the whole year? My tree has been fruiting non-stop since March. It appears that it is starting it's 3rd cycle right now which should take me to November or so. Thanks, Chris

Just search "tropical fruit tree nursery Los Angeles" and you will get 2 out of the 4 trees you want...the others you will have to hunt for. Chris

Have someone in Florida buy one for you and ship it out. Chris

Joe, that was a very nice presentation as well as a beautiful location. You could by kerosene orchard heaters that would heat that whole area without the blankets, lights, etc. Search "smudge pots"...There is a guy in Idaho that makes some and he has a shield on the top that directs the forced hot air downward thus giving a larger area of coverage per pot. Good luck with your grove. Chris

Hey guys, I use the Tiger 90 as well but I never figured out application rates. I fried a couple potted plants with just a sprinkle when I first bought it last Summer. I guess I should do the soil (in ground) analysis and start doing some math but I figured I would check with the pros. Thanks, Chris

Hey Frank, I thought I remember you saying that mango graft success rate tapers off but I can't remember the exact month? I have some Manilla seedlings that I would like to graft but I was thinking it might be too late in the summer? Thanks, Chris

Hey NewGen, yeah, I feel bad about the plumeria...I will do something so it doesn't get destroyed. You're correct about the two poinciana's. I have been in a holding pattern for a home renovation (including the landscaping) so I have a bunch of trees in large containers/boxes to plant once i get my landscape architect to draw up the plans. I think the two big trees are about 6 years old or so...i can't remember exactly. They have been stepped up to the current 24" boxes and are about 8+ft. on the smaller one and probably 9-10ft for the tree on the right. Chris

I love the "hunt talk" for fruit trees. Its great reading about all the intel people receive...relatives house, city, directions, street corners, back alleys, etc. I patrol my neighborhood all the time and find all kinds of trees I hadn't noticed before or hadn't had the knowledge of that particular variety before this forum. Happy hunting everyone. Chris
