« on: April 28, 2015, 09:52:29 AM »
Looking for any places (even online) that is a good place to buy abiu.. Thanks.  ;D

I know, I tried JF haha.. this is the only fruit I'm buying since I did try 4 times already to grow it.. still have a one gallon surviving because I planted it under an apple tree.. it's actually putting out new leaves, but very very slowly..  :(

Nice!  Good to see a grower from the heights!  :D have you tried champa  nursery? I remember seeing a tree from there last year... I would assume Abiu doesn't like this hot and dry weather!

yeah, nice to see someone from this place too! I thought I was the only one, haha.. I don't have as many plants as the people in Florida, but a good amount I think.. you can see from my profile..

I already ordered 4 plants at different times and tried.. (3 gallon size) they crumbled during the winter because it was too cold.. only have a 1 gallon one left under an apple tree.. and it seems to last the winter.. hopefully it will grow out, but doing so really slowly..I guess I need a greenhouse, but just for one plant.. I'll have to find a better idea.. even my rollinia and others are doing ok.. a little tip dieback, but nothing much this last winter (when we had the 30s temperature)..

Abiu is not grown commercially on continental USA, and probably never will be. So unless you can get a hobby grower to send you some as special favor you're out of luck. Your best bet would be to ask some forum members in southern Florida.

My small z4 abiu was planted less than 2 years ago as a small grafted tree.It is now 9feet high and loaded with young fruit even though bugs took out 50 or so fruit.

Hello friends.

I have a doubt:
I live in the area of Atlantic Forest of Brazil, and we abiu and rollinas (biribá), natives here in the region and in the Amazon region.

Are the same species?
Or abiu the amazon, biriba the amazon are different species of trees of the Atlantic Forest?

Thanks for the answer.

Rollinia is a genus of plants in the family Annona. The abiu is a genus of plants in the family Pouteria (Pouteria caimito). Two different species.

Haven't tried both, but growing rollinia. I heard both are really good.  ;D

Do you guys have any fruit for sale? Thanks. I actually got one of my trees before to last over 1 year, but it died because we have been getting temps in the 30-40s.. so too bad  :-\

i believe nelesedulis is asking about each individual fruit, and if they are two varieties or species of each (one from atlantic forest, and one from amazon)

my guess is both...some species are so closely related they can be mistaken for varieties, and some varieties look so different, they can be mistaken as a species.

Actually my doubt is that, within the same species, if they are equal.
I always see friends from other parts of Brazil, and fruits look different.
Myself, I've been in the Amazon region, in northeastern Brazil, and the trees are the same, but the fruit not so much.
Would varieties of the same species?
If so, we need to increase the collection because there are many types, namely many new trees.

I think you should keep this kind of talk to private messages.

In relation to this topic I'm looking for an abiu tree in Florida. After trying this at the fruit and spice park, it's now a must have.

The trees vary a good deal in form. There are Mango leaf types and those with smaller narrower foliage and even the type of green in the leaves varies a lot.Fruit vary in shape, colour.size and skin characteristics.

Mike , I also notice difference in vigor , some varieties grow like crazy , others hard to keep alive . Have this last problem now with the Gray ...

Luc trials in NT showed Gray was a poor performer there as it prefers a cooler and wetter climate than others.Even within varieties some go crazy and some lack vigor. This is a frustrating fruit as some trees boom and pump out huge crops of quality fruit and other trees grow slowly or refuse to set fruit.A friend had a tree that struggled and never set fruit but one season it changed. It suddenly set a big crop, looked healthy and has been a champion tree ever since.
