Hello, since acorns should start to ripen and drop with September maybe I have more luck this season. Maybe someone has a tree nearby and can sell me some fresh acorns. Thank you.

My Texas persimmon has flowered two times so far. I only have one plant and the flowers all looked the same each year and it did not set fruit - as expected. I‘m not sure what is the reason for yours to hold fruit but usually Texas persimmons should be dioecious.

Since kaphal season is underway again, I‘m trying again this year. Maybe some knows where to get fresh seeds?

Thanks again for the plants, Vlk. Received some healthy looking plants a few days ago. Fast shipping and everything was packed really well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Feijoa cold tolerance ??
« on: November 16, 2020, 12:43:31 PM »
I think Feijoas can withstand far more cold and frost than most people suspect, although it might as well depend on the soil, frost duration and microclimate.
I can only speak from my own experience: I have one Feijoa plant grown from seed permanently planted outside in the ground since 2017.
The frost period here usually extends from November to February and March (around 75 frosty days on average).
Winter 17/18 was exceptionally cold with minimum temperatures of -18°C / -0,4°F (see image for detailed temperature chart). During these cold spells I only covered my Feijoa with some fleece and some conifer twigs and no active heating or whatsoever. To my surprise my plant survived almost undamaged with only some frost burnt leaves on top and has recovered perfectly fine since then.

I believe there are a few on a campus near me-

I will check for seeds the next time I am around

Thanks for your reply. Would be great if you can locate some fresh acorns.

Hello,

I'm looking for seeds/acorns of Texas live oak Quercus fusiformis (also referred to as Quercus virginiana var. fusiformis) which should be in season right now and hardier than the regular southern live oak.

Thank you.

They have quite a few different Ziziphus jujuba varieties, too bad they dont seem to be that reliable.
Has anyone ordered Jujube plants from there or know some other european sellers of Jujube trees that have other varieties apart from the common varieties such as Lang and Li?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Arctostaphylos sp. / Manzanita
« on: September 07, 2019, 01:09:16 PM »
I stumbled over some articles about Manzanitas (Arctostaphylos) which seem to be very popular for ornamental purpose in the US. They seem to be relatively unknown in Europe (apart from the two species native to Europe). Hardiness could probably a problem in cold areas here.
But not only that, fruit seems to be edible as well - same goes for the european species. Does anyone have experience growing any of these plants?
Is it worth growing these plants for the fruit and are there differences in taste and fruit quality?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Myrica rubra
« on: June 15, 2019, 03:36:25 AM »
Hey, I could need some help with my Myrica rubra seedling.
I've already lost two seedlings and I cant seem to keep em alive. Older leaves are always starting to dry out from the tips until it would cover the entire plant and slowly killing the seedling.
Any ideas how to prevent that from happening? Do I need some special kind of fertilizer even at this young growing stages?
The pic is of my latest seedling.

I've tried to overwinter my 3-year old Musa Helen's Hybrid outside this winter. The winter was exceptionally mild this year in southern Austria. The temperature minimum was around -10°C. From November till February/March most night temperatures were below freezing temperature ... the freezing period is rather long here.
I overwintered it together with a Musa Sikkimensis in a compost pile filled with leaves. The Helen's Hybrid did not survive the test while the Musa Sikkimensis did survive (but most of the pstem did freeze back). My Musa Basjoo barely showed any damage at all.

On the other hand cold storing in a dark room seems to work well for the Helen's Hybrid and seems to be a better option.

Trying again since Myrica esculenta/nagi is in season this time of the year. Does anyone sell fresh viable seeds?

Hello, is anyone familiar with good sources or know where to get different Ziziphus jujuba cultivars within Europe other than Li and Lang?

Any updates on available fresh seeds?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Loquat relatives
« on: April 29, 2018, 03:24:51 PM »
There are around 21 different species in the Eriobotrya family. At least five species are grown for their fruit, but there seems to be hardly any information out there on any Eriobotrya fruits except for Loquats. Maybe someone has more information about it or experience growing other Eriobotryas.

Pomegranates should work for you if you go for a cold-hardy and early riping variety since normal ones wouldnt ripe in time.

If you have a sheltered spot, Feijoa could work for you as well - maybe giving it some light protection (fleece) during winter months. Mine seems to be alive after this winter in zone 7a.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: Diospyros texana
« on: April 03, 2018, 07:16:08 AM »
Hello everyone,

I‘m looking for Diospyros texana plants or seeds - I didn‘t have any luck growing from seeds last year. Preferably looking for european sellers to reduce shipping costs.

Thanks

I've been growing one since last year. Had to dig it up in autumn - if it survives the cold storing, I'm going to plant it outside again in spring and will try to overwinter it outside.

I doubt that it will survive here in southern Austria, since we have temperatures below freezing for most of the nights since November/December.  It is supposed to be less hardy than Musa Basjoo and Musa Sikkimensis, but it probably does well in regions with a milder winter and a shorter freezing period.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Prunus brigantina (alpine apricot)
« on: November 15, 2017, 06:58:37 AM »
Hello, has anyone grown Prunus brigantina (Briançon apricot/marmot plum/alpine aprico)? It's the only apricot-like wild species native to Europe.
Is it worth growing it? What does it taste like? Is there much difference to a regular apricot tree (especially taste-wise)? Where to get seeds of it?

Would love to hear if someone has experience growing this tree.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: Myrica rubra in Europe
« on: October 30, 2017, 05:19:55 AM »
Does anyone know european sources for Myrica rubra (Yumberry) plants. Grafted plants of some chinese cultivars would be of special interest; didnt find any sellers so far.

Bonus: are there any cultivars which are more frost tolerant than  others?
