Citrus General Discussion / Looking to expand citrus collection
« on: September 10, 2020, 11:40:49 AM »
Well not my citrus collection, a friend who asked me to help choose 5 varieties.

He sent me a list of what he currently has:

Kishu
Shasta gold
Gold nugget
Leexnova
Bearss lime
Washington navel
Cara cara
Shiranui
Clemenules
Boukhabza
Midknight
Ortanique
Lane late navel
Xie shan
Okitsu wase

Looking for a lemon to use in marinating meat or to be paired with food. Bearss lime is a beast but lemons are more year round. The obvious choices are improved meyer lemon, Lisbon, and eureka. Not sure if meyer lemon would work as some describe it as sweet.

For the rest of the choices mandarin and their hybrids as well as oranges. Looking for flavor, uniqueness, and productivity. Secondary desirable characteristics include extended harvest season and season “non-peak” citrus season (may-october).

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to uncover mango grafts.
« on: June 28, 2020, 01:52:09 PM »
On June 12, 2020 i grafted mango scions. I did 5 trees in 3 gallon pots which i stuck under a tree to keep direct sunlight off of them. The 8 remaining grafts were done on in ground trees. I covered the grafts with aluminum foil to keep the sun off them. All grafts are still alive with a couple actively pushing and some with increasingly swollen buds. Im wondering when can i remove the aluminum foil.? I want to remove it before the real summer heat kicks in but dont want to do it too early resulting in failure. Thanks.

« on: July 20, 2019, 10:49:59 AM »
Is there any successful grafting technique used when the rootstock has a  smaller diameter than the budwood?

Tried searching the forum but couldnt find anything.
Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Bud selection
« on: July 13, 2019, 10:24:01 AM »
I recently prepared mango budwood to graft by cutting off leaves. It seems that the growth under the prepared section is ready to graft. Should i take the section under the prepared section? Or wait until/if the prepared section buds swell? Is the bottom section ready to be used?

“Prepared section”

Lower section

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Side veneer vs side cleft
« on: September 09, 2018, 09:51:34 AM »
Im getting ready to graft mangoes for the first time from budwood I got from JF (thanks). I'm not completely new to grafting, Ive done apples, plums, and peaches, but i usually stick to the brutally effective cleft graft. After reading this forum and watching tons of youtube videos im thinking of using a side cleft graft or a veneer graft.

The problem from my point is its hard to tell from the videos what is the difference between the cut on the rootstock between both techniques.
Can anyone with knowledge of both, techniques detail what are the differences, if any?

Which technique would be more successful for a first time mango grafter? What kind of success, if any can I expect?

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava Grafting (top work)
« on: February 14, 2018, 02:29:51 PM »
I want to top work a tropical guava but there isnt really much info on best method and practice. I hope someone on this forum can guide me onto the best possibility of success. Here are a couple of questions i have:

what time of year is best time to graft guava?

What type of graft is best?

What scionwood is best (hardwood, semi hardwood, or green)?

Where on the tree is more likely to be successful (on hardwood, semihardwood, or greenwood)?

So far the only academic study outlining this type of guava work is http://fshs.org/proceedings-o/1955-vol-68/321-324%20(TAMBURO).pdf

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Mango Journey Begins
« on: January 09, 2018, 03:11:41 PM »
I always assumed that mangoes were an impossible fruit to grow in my climate. So I resigned myself to buying them from the super market. I then stubled upon a thread on gardenweb from 2005 and began dreaming with having my own tree. Then i started paying attentention as to what the people around my home grew in their yards. I was surprised to see mango trees being successfully grown in my area.

I decided to buy a mango tree. Searching around i found champa nursery which had the mango variety mallika which sounded amazing. Unfortunately, the tree was plagued with lack of vigor and was constantly trying to flower. It just died. My hopes dashed, i just  pulled it out and moved on.

Months later I came across this forum and read lots of threads which described the problem I had with my mango tree. The tree was indeed on turpentine rootstock. I decided to heed the wisdom of those on this forum who successfully grow mangoes in southern california and buy 2seedling manila mango trees .

Im hoping that with help from this forum i will be able to become a successful southern california mango grower.

This tree was purchased from champa $25

This one was obtained from lowes $25

The measurements were taken from soil line of the container.

I want fruiting bushy type tree. At which height should i pug the tree when i put one in the ground? How about the one that i put in a large container?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
