Tropical Fruit Discussion / charred rice husks
« on: November 19, 2014, 04:21:40 AM »
http://japanhomestead.blogspot.com/2010/03/rice-hull-charcoal-making-and-using-it.html

I like to mix my soil for containers with charred rice husks. It is sold in Thailand as cactus-soil.

I didn't know it was so good for the soil, i will use it more because it is very cheap as well.

I have 2 questions about this fruit:

1- are the seeds from a rose-apple very very tiny? Or do i have seedless chomphu tubtim ?

2- Are the rose-apples from Petchaburi really very sweet and flavourfull??

I am looking for seeds from good roseapples so i bought a kg of chomphu tubtim but i can't find the seeds, only very tiny black things but i wonder if they are seeds.

Then my wife told me that the Phetchaburi roseapples are far better, also cost 5 times more but hey quality costs money.

Does anybody know the Phetchaburi rose-apples? And why do they have to come from Phetchaburi? Is the soil or climate there perfect to grow those?

http://www.phetchaburi.go.th/page_pic/page_chompoo.html

There are 2 kinds of phetchaburi chomphu.
1= Rainbow which has brix 8-15%
2- Petch Suwan has brix 6-11%

Well the chomphu tubtim that we have on the table now go into the bin....water tastes better.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango pruning and new sprouts
« on: November 03, 2014, 12:52:04 AM »
I just bought a small grafted mangotree from Red Pearl mango and it has 9 sprouts coming out of 2 main branches which had been pruned in the nursery.

They all grow well and i had never seen so many sprouts coming out of 2 main stems.

My question is: What is the maximum amount of sprouts coming out of a pruned branche that you have seen?

For me 5 is the record so far. My new tree has a branche with 5 and one with 4 sprouts. I will continue pruning it when the leaves are mature and see if i can make the perfect pruned dwarf mangotree with as many tips as possible.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New mango that bears 8 months a year
« on: November 02, 2014, 08:34:11 AM »
http://www.sundaytimes.lk/100829/Plus/plus_16.html

This new mango is from Sri Lanka and bears fruit 8 months a year.

It is a small tree and the name is  kartha kolomban

Does anybody have some more info?

New mango in town

There’s good news for lovers of this seasonal fruit in the form of a new variety--TEJC-- that will be available for 8 months of the year
By Dhananjani Silva
Are you a mango lover? And do you long for the mango season so that you can relish the heavenly taste of a juicy kartha kolomban? The good news is that that long wait for the season to come is now over- with a special mango variety available in the local market. This type actually bears fruit eight months of the year.

The new mango variety which has hit the market lately is a special mixed variety of the local Kartha kolamban which is endemic to Jaffna and the famed Indian Alphonso mango, says the Manager Administration and Marketing Nelna Agri Development Pvt. Ltd Wasantha Warusapperuma. It is only available in Sri Lanka. Nelna Agri Development, a subsidiary of the Nelna Group of Companies, a leading poultry manufacturing company in Sri Lanka, is currently cultivating this variety in its farms as one of their major projects. The fact that it is not seasonal is what sets it apart from the rest.

TEJC as the mango is known is named after its creator Tom Ellawela Juan Carlos - owner of the Galkiriyagama farm in Dambulla. Grown under dry conditions in places in Uva and the North Central region, TEJC looks like a foreign fruit in appearance and is bigger than the normal mano. The fruit has a unique taste and fragrance and weighs about 800 gms-1kg, says Mr. Warusapperuma.

Warusapperuma
“Investment to cultivate this mango variety is higher than on others. Our agri development company started cultivating this variety in three locations in Ambilipitiya - in Thalawa, Hingura and Thunkama.

An important fact is that we do not use chemical fertilizer for our mango cultivations but Nelna compost instead,” Mr. Warusapperuma said adding that traditional methods are used to tackle fruit flies and fungus.

Once cultivated, the first crop will be within three and half years after which the tree will bear fruit eight month of the year. One tree produces about 200 fruits per year. The tree is very small, therefore handling is very easy, Mr. Warusapperuma went on to explain.

According to him, there is a big demand for this mango variety from Europe but the company has still not gone into export as the demand from the local market is high.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pearl mango and Red ivory
« on: November 01, 2014, 07:45:30 AM »
I bought these 2 mangotree's but i can't find much info about them.

Pearl is a red small mango is what i saw on a pic.

Red ivory is a very big mango with some red/pink color.

How do they taste and are they susceptible for diseases??

Pearl is from Australia but i bought it from a shop with only taiwanese mangotree's, they called it red pearl (mook daeng in thai)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizer amounts for avocado
« on: October 31, 2014, 09:08:46 AM »
http://www.fao.org/docrep/003/X6902E/x6902e0b.htm

Again i 'm astonished about the amount of fertilizer recommended by a website. This time it is for avocado.

A young grafted avocadotree from 70 cm (2 feet) tall needs 125 gram (4 ounce) 0-0-46 plus 125 gram 15-15-15 2 months after planting (according to this website written by many official experts)

Then again after 3 months it needs 150 gram of both fertilizers each.

Did anybody here give his/her tree's so much fertilizer? I think i will try it this time, i have one tree for experimenting but i don't want to kill it of course. It just sounds very unnatural to me to give a young tree big bags full of chemicals but i aint an expert and am always in for an experiment.

A mixed fertilizer of 46-0-0 and 15-15-15 at 250 grams/tree is applied two months after planting and the same rate is repeated again three months later. The same formula with a slightly higher rate of 300 grams/tree is applied in the second year at the beginning of the rainy season with repeated applications every three months. From the third year onwards, as well as for bearing trees, the amount of applied fertilizer depends on the radius of the tree canopy, i.e. at every one-meter radius, one kilogram of mixed fertilizer of 46-0-0 and 15-15-15 is applied.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / phytophthora and potassiumphosphite
« on: October 23, 2014, 09:09:59 PM »
Can anybody tell me how much potassiumphosphite i have to use as a soildrench for my avocado and duriantree's?

And also how often i should use it?

For foliar spray i will use Resistim which is a mixture of potassiumphosphite and some hormones. I read that this works better against rootrot but i also want to use a soildrench of pure potassiumphosphite.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting-knife
« on: October 21, 2014, 02:51:02 AM »
I just bought a Bahco grafting-knife which  makes the cuts black, it seems to react with the mangoscions.

Is that a problem?

My stainless steel Victorinox never did that, it makes nice clean cuts.

Don't buy the Bahco grafting-knife, it is bevelled on 2 sides and doesn't make straight cuts. It also is not very sharp.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting out an abiutree
« on: September 18, 2014, 01:39:37 AM »
The planting hole should contain 200 g single superphosphate, 200 g dolomite and 2-3 kg of well cured animal manure.

http://stfc.org.au/abiu-pouteria-caimito

I want to plant out my abiutree today but am confused about the above text.

Does it really say i have to put 200 gram of 10-52-17 chemical fertilizer in the hole before planting? I have a pot of it but it i've never used that much before.

And for the manure i have dried cowdung but 2-3 kg is a huge amount. Then i need a big hole to fill it with that.
