I'm looking for a male flowering tree. 6-10ft preferable.  Please let me know. Thanks!

This is common with Excalibur. I've heard this countless times.  The problem is there property is very disorganized, only because its over crowded, but because they don't have trees sectioned off from one another. Also, as far as the workers and ownership goes, the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing.  Buying anything from them is a gamble on multiple levels.

Redland has been moderate for me. The real all star for growth is Rainbow.  I don't know how people could legitimately keep that tree under 20ft

You probably bought the "Rainbow" local being in Florida but out of curiosity where did you buy it? I prefer it being vigorous as I'm planting it on a ranch so space isn't an issue, I've read that rainbow tastes very good too. I've looked around and haven't seen it for sale on the internet. I can buy Vernon and Suebelle at my local Home Depot for cheap.

I solicited scions from California and grafted it onto a seedling tree. I grafted it last june and I've already had to cut it back twice. Imagine that!

Do jackfruit varities really taste that differently ?? I mean is it like PPK Mango to Sweettart Mango kind of difference or only slightly? All of the Jacks I've ever tasted, taste exactly the same, only with varying levels of sweetness.  And I've only fruited black gold in my yard, so I have not reference.  What do you think?  I have Bangkok Lemon, Berry, and Amber also, but they have not fruited.

Both of those trees for me (in south florida) are bi-annual producers.  They may produce a half dozen or so fruit in their off year MAX, but every other year they are heavy producers.  They've done this consistently for me over the last 6-7 years

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pitangatuba Flower Question

Since the limbs are very flexible and small diameters, I literally bend the flowers from one branch and rubbed them against/inside the flowers from another branch.  If we can agree that that one image I posted is indeed a developing fruit, then this provided (from what I can see) a 100% success rate of pollination.  But I also agree based on my research, that this fruit tree/bush and its flavor and behavior can vary greatly from specimen to specimen.

Thanks guys, I guess time will tell for sure. Always exciting to fruit something for the first time, especially from seed

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pitangatuba Flower Question
« on: March 24, 2021, 08:52:59 AM »
Does this flower look like it was pollinated? Looks like a small fruit developing but I’m unsure. This would be the first time I’ve fruited one myself.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is this really Ross Sapote ???
« on: December 17, 2020, 11:48:50 AM »
As stated above, after Ross, the next best IMO is Fairchild 2.  I have had good examples of Trompo and Aurea but definitely not 100% consistent as top quality.

Oscar (Fruitlovers) supposedly has a very good selection but I haven't tried it.

I've heard this before as well, so I'll have to be on the lookout in spring for Fairchild #2 budwood. Bye Bye Trompo

Thanks Murahilin and Johnny Redland
I shall take both your suggestions and go forth on my search for a great Malay Apple tree in my own yard. I may go take a look at the one down at Fruit and Spice and decide if it’s pretty enough for the front yard. It’s so rare that I’m sure there won’t be too many fruit thieves. My front yard has solid sun.
Thanks again y’all

Once it’s established, it fruits so heavily that you might actually welcome some fruit thieves

My ross fruits more often with bigger crops than my canistel.

Mike do you prefer Ross over all other Canistels? Or is there another Canistel that can rival it?

They look close...
I’m growing about 10 seedlings directly from Bill Whitman’s original ‘Ross’ introduction from 1968.

I look forward to seeing what differences may occur between them since Ross is generally grafted.
Nice to see Shot has some direct specimens from Bill. Were they all grafted?

I'm also growing a single seedling tree, that started VERY slow and is now picking up steam.  I plan to plant-out the seeds from the above pictured fruit if its decent to see what I get.  I also have a grafted specimen that's about 6ft tall now.  But these fruit in the photo will be my first opportunity to taste it.  I know there are better varieties of Canistel than the Trompo I have planted in my yard, but damn that Trompo is bad; its relatively dry and there's just something about the taste that is off-putting. But good lord does it fruit HEAVILY!

Anybody have any recommendations on Canistels that they believe are even better than Ross?  I ask because the Trompo I have will most definitely get top worked in the Spring

One word of warning about Malay apple, it seems like the common nursery stock in Florida (at least from PIN) is not that great.
I had 3 planted so far, one fruit after 8 years (only year to fruit) it been there for like 15 years at this point
I also have one planted at my current house since 2014 and no flowers yet.

Seems like everyone I know who bring seeds from "back home" has much better success with the quality fruit and precocity

Excalibur has two different grafted varieties. A white fruiting type and one that one that gets very dark that is named "Black". I've had the fruit from the Black one a few times and it was pretty good. If I remember correctly, the Black was from a fruit Richard Wilson found in a market in Central America.

In response to being called out, I will admit my daughter loves them. She was eating 3 per sitting of larger ones at the age of 2. But what do those darn kids know anyway  ::)

She has great taste in fruit. I was unsuccessful in trying to convince my kids to try Malay apple fruit this year.

Do you have a tree or did someone give you the fruit?

We've tried the fruit the past 2 years from one of the trees at Fruit and Spice Park.  The tree they have there is different than most, in that it has GIANT leaves.  A friend of mine got budwood from that tree a few years back his trees grow FAST!  All have already flowered and are at least 10-15ft tall in 65 gal pots

I might have to ban you from the forum for speaking ill of one of the greatest fruit in existence.

I would rather a malay apple any day over the majority of fruit.

Yes, grows well and fast. Fruit is mediocre, but plentiful and pretty. Flowers are gorgeous

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this really Ross Sapote ???

I was sold these so-called “Ross” Sapotes. They have yet to ripen so can’t comment on taste or flesh, but I thought Ross was smaller and had very visible striations on them. What do you think?

Mine all died below 40F. Wind was not a factor.  Trees anywhere from 3ft to 12ft

I live 20 miles north of key largo and ALL of my guanabanas over the years have died from cold winters.
