I have some seeds sitting around in my kitchen counter. They are about a month old, so probably not much good now. Have been too busy to trade or even visit the website for a few months. Mine produces two very distinct types of fruit on the same tree, some massive and rounded, the others medium sized and elongate. Odd plant.

Thank you for the reply, Bruce. From the little info I have been able to gather about it, it seems to be a very unique plant. I would like to see how it performs here.

I thought papaya seeds can stay viable for a while even if kept in such conditions?

Hi Adam you are right, I have tested batches of Papaya seeds up to 3 years old and about 50% are still fertile.

Bob I have a couple of broad leaf 4 to 5'' that I have no use for,I can try to send them to you, in a flat rate box, if you like.

thanks for the info Carcarlo,

i have limited experience germinating papaya seeds,
but i remember germinating the broadleaf, it took over 4months if I'm not mistaken!

i couldn't believe how long it took!

I kept one of these trees to try some tissue culture propagation, with some luck I might have some for sale in the next year.

but we wanted to test the fruit out before propagating the plant...even though the tree has unusual leaves, we must confirm it's bisexual (which it is), and a tasty fruit  worth planting.

5 years is not unusual especially if they are in the soil.If they dried their life span is shortened.Viability % drops off pretty fast at first after being non fresh and seems to slowly taper with dormant seeds.
There must be plenty of people with fruiting broadleaf papaya by now as the seeds were fanned across the globe 2 years ago or more.It is a pity the first ones were the females instead of the bisex which went out afterwards.

Adam, my broadleaf, seeds germinate within 15 days, but Mike is right I have had seeds germinate in the soil from drop fruits in the spot were some of my trees where 6 + yrs. ago. I also have notice the broadleaf are slow growers, unlike the Dwarf  Surya #2 Hybrid that I have. I also have a tree from some seeds I got from Cuba, about 15 yrs. ago, I'm on my 4th or 5th tree, the rest have been all killed by freezes, this one is 5 years old and 24 + feet tall, it doesn't stop growing and it has produced over 150 fruits so far some in the 8-12 lb. range with deep yellow flesh and very sweet , and she's still going and growing. Here are pics. of the 24+ footer and fruit next to a 1 gal and 3 gal pot.

Mines sprout. In only 2 weeks (only two of about 20 I receive) and another one is emerging now 2 weeks after the first ones, Im glad cause I thought I was going to get 0% germination cause the seeds were in transit for 2 and half months! And they look dry but I soak them in water for a day and plant them next day....

Hola you are going to be surprised some will germinate weeks and even months after planting.

They grow as fast as other varieties at my place.I suspect they are more tropical than standard types and have slower growth at lower temperatures.

i see papaya popping up everywhere in my yard from compost.
some areas, i know i havent added compost in at least a year, more likely 2 years.
and i have had fresh seeds germinate in less than a week.

A lot of people like Aloha seed, my experince with them was not as good.
i think the seeds were old. i bought from them twice.

Ive had much better results with University of Hawaii seed program
they send a pack out for $1
they have other stuff for cheap as well, like peppers, cabbage etc...

carcarlo
do you have seed from that super-broadleaf ?
happy to pay shipping,
or i can trade some stuff...
have guava, strawberry tree (mutingia Calabura),
and some others...

Hi yes I have seeds, but that huge tree is not a broadleaf, it came from some seeds a friend got from Cuba about 12/15 yrs. ago, pm me if you want some.
