« on: September 03, 2015, 01:18:51 PM »
Oriental fruit fly has been detected in large quantities in the Redlands.
From what I have heard over 100 species of trees and plants will be on the quarantine list.
I have not seen the map yet but from what I am being told. It covers a large part of the Redlands. Will
Keep this updated as I learn more.

they are also asking all residents of the Redlands not to transport fruit or give to someone outside the area.

... "According to a release by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Oriental Fruit Fly attacks more than 230 different fruits, vegetables and nuts, including avocado, fig, grapefruit, guava, loquat, mango, roseapple, papaya, peach, persimmon, Surinam cherry and white sapote.

o.k.  wtf is (are?) the redlands?  is this an area, or a soil type?  i gather from the context that south florida types know what it is.  (they are?)  please realize that there is a vast majority of people who are not south florida residents.

thanx, dom

when i read about "the bay area" i wonder whether it's san francisco, tampa, galveston, or massachusetts.  a lot of the time context makes it clear.  sometimes, not so much.

I get confused about stuff like that too. There's a Redlands, CA not far from me. That one actually ends with "s" too.
But I learned about the FL one from white sapote discussions. The 'Redland' cultivated is pretty much unknown here and people like the local ones better.

Apparently, the oriental fruit fly is a relatively common find in Florida and is not that hard to eradicate:

"While not established in Florida, oriental fruit flies are occasionally trapped in this state, recent occurrences being in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2010, but easily eliminated (Steck 2007) (FDACS 2010)."

Oh, that's encouraging. I was thinking that all soft fruits in Florida are done. Somehow I thought it's a really bad situation.

I'm interested in following this to see how things develop. Hopefully they can get a handle on it and there wont be too much damage.

In South Florida (Miami area), the community north of Homestead is called "Redland."  It's referred to as "the Redland" also.  Singular!--plural ("Redlands") is a mistake.  (Not trying to make Mike Bender look bad.  Just setting the record straight.)

I was down in the" Redland" this morning. In MIAMI just so there is no confusion. This is what I know so far. Effective 9-5-15 81 sq miles of the "Redland" will be under a quarantine. They have trapped 111!oriental fruit flys all together. None in 6 days ( which is good) but before they can declare it contained or eradicated it must go through two life cycles approx 60 days. There will be additional news as to exact protocols of what is and is not allowed. Ariel spraying will start soon. As more correct info becomes available I will post it or others can. With hundreds of fruit growers both commercial and private along with many small mom and pop nurseries the job the dept of agriculture will have its hands full. Let's hope they get a quick handle on this.

I believe fruit sales will continue but I would be careful from who it's purchased as to people selling out of their vehicles and such. I don't have all the info yet. Hopefully later today I can get more info.

Just spoke with Erik Tietig from PIN. For clarrification, no fruit is allowed to be transported outside the quarantine zone! Wow. Got to be devestating to many businesses.

The only one thing i found to be effective here apart from putting traps is to harvest carefully all the infested fruits/vegetables/anytnig than to open them and kill all the worms inside usually with boling water.
If you just trash the spoiled fruits the larvae will keep on growing, will bury into the soil and a new generation of adults will appear!

Oriental fruit fly devastates abius. With them around you have to bag every single fruit. They are easy to stop only if caught real early. After that it's not easy at all! Then they can only be contained, not stopped.
True that trashing infected fruit does no good. But if infected fruits are buried deeply the flies cannot survive.

Saw them checking a trap in front of my house today. It was negative. He said another negative breeding cycle and we'll be clear.
