What fruits grow well in partial shade? (zone 10a)
« on: December 28, 2017, 10:46:43 PM »
I have a spot in my San Diego yard that gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

What fruit tree should I grow in this spot?

I currently have a pineapple guava, pomegranate, guava, and surinam cherry in shade locations.

What should I add? Will Acerola fruit good fruit in partial shade for example?

Cacao likes some shade.  Does it get cold there?

I definitely recommend searching this site; this is a very frequent question that comes up, and reading over past threads will give you a lot more suggestions than you could possibly get just in this one  :)

My white sapotes in partial shade and in full shade seem to grow better than the ones in full sun.

Interesting. Do you know what varieties they are?

Cherimoya can grow in shade? I was under the impression they required as much sun as possible to develop the sugar.

Cherry of rio grande, coffee

I have heard of the cherry of the rio grande. Is it tasty? I've planted a surinam cherry and absolutely love the spicy taste.

Not sure of the Cherry of the Rio Grande in warm parts of SoCal...I have seen large specimens in my area that have never fruited. Maybe its bad luck or lack of nutrients but it could be lack of chill as well. I know Suriname cherry does great as a lot of other Eugenias do in this area- unsure of CORG. Chris

I have a Suebelle in full sun, except during the summer I cover it with 60% shade. It's not dying, and it's a little bushy but it's not growing very fast. I have a Vernon up against a cement wall with a big banana plant on one side and a guava on the other, that sees almost no direct sun, has grown 30-36" in 8 months. It got too leggy so I finally decided to cut 18" off the top. Also the seedings I have underneath a mango tree are growing like crazy and look really healthy while the ones out in the open(under filtered light during summer) are growing slower. The weather is very hot here so this may just be because of my particular climate.

Cherries actually prefer partial shade in the SoCal climate. Not saying they grow well in zone 10 but they do better in partial shade than full sun.

I've never tried it myself, but my understanding is that the taste is very much like that of regular cherries (P. avium).

The anonas do well in partial shade.  They do like a moderate amount of water and some heat to develop the sugars.  Here in their native Southern Brazil, summers are hot and humid.  Likewise, Cherry of the Rio Grand is also from this region.  The fruit is reminiscent of the cherry, though not quite as sweet.

Starfruit does well under full shade at the experiments garden at our local extension (Phoenix).

almost all or all the tropical fruit trees thay I grow will like sun from the morning and shade or semi shade in the afternoon, specially the eugenias and jaboticabas

ive grown guava in shade (maybe 2 hrs sun) and they have almost no fruit at all.

Pawpaw !! supposedly does great in shade.

miracle fruit, most annona, most spondis i think.....
loquat, coffee, Caimito and black sapote supposedly   do well
(my black sapote grows fine, but too young for fruit)
my loquat in shade %80 of the day just put on lots of flowers.
same amounts as the ones in full sun.

i have a bignay (from small cutting) in a container getting full sun now
but, i think its happier in the shade - in summer at least.

i have a pineapple guava in the shade that wasnt doing to well at first
after i gave it iron and a little magnesium, the leaves in the lower part of the plant
turned very dark green.
The younger foliage that got more sun, stayed a lighter color.
ive noticed the darker green leaves on lots of plants in the shade.

to me, the darker green  a leaf is, the more it can convert sun to photosynthisis
and ive noticed plants in ahde normally have darker leaves
so, plants in shade may have a larger demand for iron and magnesium.
