Last minute cold prep SE FL
« on: January 03, 2018, 04:36:30 PM »
I wasn’t expecting or didn’t notice it was projected to be around 32* degrees here in PSL tomorrow around sunrise. What should I do with 3+ 7’ mango trees that have bubblers on the irrigation system. I am thinking of putting pots around the trunk and running the bubblers. Not sure what to do with my other small Lychee, small Jabotacabas, and a few small banana trees. I have an irrigation system I could turn on but it won’t be able to consistently cover all the trees.  Should I wrap the trunks with towels or blankets? Just not sure what to do to protect the trees.

I checked another site, looks like it will be close to 32 for a couple hours here in western PSL.

consider heaping up dirt woods chips or anything at the base of trees and above the graft line so that if worse comes to worse the trees can sprout back and live again. Heaped up material will protect again wind chill. Then remove this heaped material as the sun heats things up tomorrow.

I am looking at 35 degrees.
I have a couple of grafts from earlier this year that have flushed once or not at all.  What is my best course of action?  Some are on larger plants and I don't see an out other than wrapping the graft growth in a towel.  Others are on a small plant and I think covering is the option here.
Do I need to cover for temperatures down to 35?

Wrapping the stem will protect the tree but what I hope to protect is both the tree and the grafted varieties.
Suggestions welcome.

By the way, I am considering placing an electric lamp (halogen bulb) under a big black planting pot (15 gallon) and hoping it radiates heat to keep the temperatures up a degree or two close to a grouping of trees.  Anyone done this?

try the black weed cloth from Costco. That's what I use. That stuffs dry very fast and it's very good in terms of blocking the cold
