read this abstract (it's in English as well as Portuguese on the same page)

looks like Uvalha fruits are no good for some animals!

(I bet the seeds were the source of the poison, and not the flesh.  I know the seeds are bitter, and taste toxic)

yes people will be fine to eat the fruit, but I'd be careful feeding fruits to animals who might masticate and ingest the toxic contents of the seeds!

Adam,
The article does not mention Eugenia pyriformis.  It mentions Eugenia uvalha cambess. They are two different  fruits.

The text also says that Talisia esculenta can cause similar poisoning symptoms.

it is a synonym...same species..I just changed the name to E. pyriformis because E. uvalha is not as commonly used on the forum.

it's funny they don't even try to locate the source of the poison within the fruit (they should have fed two groups of sheep E. pyriformis..one group should have been fed just flesh, the other just seeds)

and it seems to give the fruit a bad wrap...even though it's most likely the seeds ...which I would assume have evolved to have some sort of toxin to keep animals from eating them.

the moral of the story seems to be...don't chew up and eat Eugenia seeds!  especially the large ones!!

Adam,
Please stop digging bad stuff about Eugenia pyriformis. Now, my future seeds (my tree flowered and did not set fruit.  Maybe,   one or two more years to fruit) just lost at least 50% of their value! Ahahahahahahahahah  ;D

hahaha!

i'll take all the seeds you can grow!  half price right??

i really posted this article to debunk it!  I think they are safe for sheep to eat, as long as they spit out the seeds (for us to plant later!  :P )

I love this species!  (and I have only tasted the acidic types!)
