I know it's the most divisive mango out there! Love it /hate it, cat vomit or top 10 !

Personally, I love a good Carrie mango if you can pick it correctly and catch in the 48 hour window of " just right" but for the last three years my tree has been a Dud as far as producing. I haven't seen any of the others in my neighborhood do much either. It seems that they just arn't setting any fruit around here,( Merritt island). I am seriously considering top working the tree to something that is more productive, ( sugar loaf, tripplesec, honey kiss, also open to suggestions) Mine used to make buckets of them but now all the ones i know of close by have all stopped setting fruit and its not form a lack of trying or spraying. There is so much pollen in the air around mine a have to breath through my Shirt to look to see if anything has set.

If you hate it, OK i get it, tell me something better.

If you love it, also tell me something better!

Is anyone else having the same issue?

So after a few seasons to make sure it wasn't just a fluke im excited to report that I have stumbled upon a veriety that produces delicious mangos in winter. It has done so for several seasons in a row, not a motherload of them but enough to warrant a real evaluation and a determination of whether it is a new or forgotten veriety.

The tree is likely between 30 and 40 years old, and 30 pluss feet tall. planted in the yard of a home built in the early 60's in merritt island, the current owner who has lived at the property for 8 years and was not passed on any info on the tree.

The tree produces a bountiful summer crop without being sprayed, some anthrcnose susceptibility but the skin seems to keep it out of the flesh. The summer crop is certainly more flavorful but the winter crop is still fantastic. I would put it in the classic sweet profile with fiber comparable to certain commercial veriety but not objectionable.

I will continue to update with an in depth evaluation as the season unfolds. Unfortunately there are no more fruit on the tree this winter, but I will post pictures and keep track of its progress.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hail storm in brevard ...
« on: March 30, 2019, 09:48:27 PM »

So what was said to be a once in 20 years hail storm took out about 75% of my mangos. The ones that didn't get knocked off got bruised or cut and are starting to get rotten spots on them and fall off. Might be more like 90% of the crop when it's all said and done. Was anyone else affected?

After several forum searches I just couldn't find a good thread that had the info I was looking for in one convenient place. Lots of references to varieties that have been "Topworked" together but not a lot of follow up on how the varieties complemented or created negative issues, such as alternate bearing varieties with regular producers, fungal care issues that might make varieties less compatible to top work together as it relates to a spraying/care regiment.  ( such as LZ issues with powdery mildew and sensitivity to sulfur) and of course the most obvious issue of growth habits.  Please share any before and after update pictures and any opinions you may have on the subject.

I currently have one project tree going mostly just as a practice seedling tree from spare parts with Glenn, sea crest, and two I forgot to label. Growing very well do to a large seedling root system.

I know this gets beat to death but it still seems relevant to talk about with so many new varieties.

There are some I have not had the opportunity to try yet but I did get to try a bunch of new and new to me Mangos in 2018 and it definitely rearranged my TOP Ten.

Based on Flavor

#1 for me is still Coconut cream
2 E4 ( first year to try it.)
  3 Sweet tart
  4 Carrie
  5 CAC
6 Pina Collada  ( first year to try it)
  7 Beverly
8 Lemon zest/lemon merengue ( pretty much tasted the same for me this year)
  9 Southern blush
10 DOT

Just as a point of reference, I ate a lot of mangos this year.

             Honorable mention

Gary, venus, fruit cocktail, "young", haden (still classy), Edward, Gary, Julie,

No longer in Favor (could have been off year for them ? Also, JMHO.)

Val Carrie, Graham ( jelly sead), julliet, Pickering, Maha, Valencia pride, cogshall (jelly sead), NDM, florogon, Rosigold

New to me this year but not impressed with

creambrulee, fruit punch, harvest moon, Choc anon, Cushman, Duncan, Kathy, O-15, Pineapple pleasure, J-12 dwarf Hawaiian, Rapoza

                            *Still waiting to try*

Orange sherbet, M-4, Guava, butter cream, Peach cobbler, Honey kiss, spirit of 76, ugly betty, phoenix, cotton candy,
orange essence, Juicy peach, Edgar, Angie

I thought I was doing a good job of even watering during the dry spell but I found a few of my PPK split open. Is that a normal trait for them? I even found a split open Rosigold next door.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Orchardcrime.com (not for the faint of heart)
« on: February 26, 2018, 09:11:09 AM »
So while driving down tropical trail in south Merritt island I saw a large sign that said someone had gone into a local mango Orchard and cut down three trees right up by the road. I can only think of one reason someone would commit such a heinous crime, Revenge!!! But why? unhappy customer? disgruntled employee? ticked off neighbor? Random act of violence?

One thing I did note was that there was no actual fence restricting access to at least that portion of the property, just a vegetation screen of eureka palms blocking the view from the road but anyone could just walk right up to the trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / If you like PINA COLADAS
« on: February 07, 2018, 11:54:24 AM »
If you like Pina Coladas

There getting lost to the rain

If you like spraying trees at midnight

then you'll have no reason to complain

If your not into mangos

Then you have half a brain!

One more disappointing year for my Pina Colada, looks like no fruit will set thanks to the wet winter despite spraying for anthracnose and PM. is anyone else having any luck? I have yet to get to even try one. Thank goodness i'ts in a 45gl pot and I wont have to dig it up or waist the yard space on it if it keeps these shenanigans up.

Please share your opinion of the Espoma Organic Citrus-tone Plant Food and any real world results if you have first hand experience using it. I am considering making a switch to this product VS using straight up 10-10-10 sometimes 12-0-12 and alternating with the VIGORO 6-4-6 citrus fert with micro's from HD. I try and put a little bit on at the first of every month and sometimes stake a hole in the ground and poor it in, hoping it will keep it from washing out through my very sandy soil. I know that Excalibur makes an excellent slow release with micro fert but Im 3 hours north. Ive used the Garden Tone on vegetable plants with very impressive yields that I have yet to see using anything else.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pickering and Pina Colada starting to bloom.
« on: November 20, 2017, 08:33:14 AM »
The last cold snap has caused one of my Pickering and my Pina Coloda trees to bloom already here in Merritt island. It seems a little early and I wander if any fruit would make it through the rest of the season or should I just cut off any fruit that might set and hope they bloom again in the spring?

about 20 years ago my dad had the best tasting Oranges I had ever eaten and I grew up in east Orlando with citrus everywhere. However, the county came and took all the citrus trees one day claiming that they had a code enforcement officer who would arrest my dad if he continues to deny them access to the trees. I guess it was due to the citrus Canker scare in the area, they took all the trees in the whole neighborhood. Two weeks later the county abandoned the program.  Any way I finally got him to tell me that it wasn't an orange but an Orlando Tangelo and agree to replant something. I myself would also like something that comes in when all my Mango trees are sleeping.

What would be the top 5 recommendations and why?   My concern is that the Tangelo don't produce very well but man are they tasty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seeking info on M-4 mango
« on: April 11, 2017, 11:14:10 AM »
Does anyone have any info on the "M-4" A forum search did not reveal much, just that it was "sweet like candy" and tasted coconutty.  How does it compare to the Coconut cream ? would it be a replacement for the C/C ?  How long has it been in cultivation/ released? early, mid or late season?

13
More specifically who has fruiting trees and is willing to share/sell some of the new stuff in the area. I plan to make the trip south for the season but would really like to find some to try closer. Also to see what does well taste wise in my area. I have several new varieties that will not be ready to fruit for a while but will be willing to return any favors.

14
Pretty much all of my trees are swelling at the buds or already holding small fruit. Should I snip them of just below the tip to encourage vegetative/ root growth now or should I let them. some have been in the ground for two years from 7gl but I let them fruit the last two seasons. the rest are still in pots 15/25gl, what's the best thing to do at the moment?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sweet tart or Kathy?
« on: February 01, 2017, 10:19:47 AM »
I need to plant the sweet tart ( 25gl) or let it go and plant the Kathy (3gl) I have not had the opportunity to try either yet but don't have room for anything that is close in flavor profiles. Which one should I keep and why? I know there are lots of threads on each one but I was hoping for input on a more direct comparison.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best potting soil for mango trees?
« on: January 23, 2017, 12:31:41 PM »
I have a few trees that I want to put in the next size up in order to buy some time until I can clear out some room for them. I have read up on the "Gritty Mix" and that seems to be more appropriate for long term container planting. The Mix that is in the pots from ZHPP is a proprietary secret so it is not available. Your experiences and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Fafard commercial mix and another where already recommended to me but I was hoping to be able to produce something on my own and save a bunch of money.

18
I've found several of these on multiple trees. No damage that I can see? They have a hard outer shell and look like a starfish???

19
I just got the go ahead to start preparing and planting a full acre as a joint endeavor with a friend. I want to get it right as it could lead to more opportunities. I am also open to lychee or anything else that would be able to make this a profitable endeavor. I was thinking about starting with the best of the new releases Phoenix, cotton candy and maybe Kathy? that way my investment in trees would be low since I can only get 3gl but Im open to anything.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When should I let my trees bear fruit
« on: January 11, 2017, 03:04:30 PM »
I have several trees that have been in the ground for about two years now. All started out as mature for the pot 7gl. I never culled the fruit off at all, I just let them do there thing and got a few from each last year but not much at all. Now the trees seem like they didn't grow as much as I thought they would have. Is that from letting them fruit or possibly from a poor root system from being in the pot too long and not root pruning them? Also hurricane Mathew nocked them around a bit and I have to stake some.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangos of the diminican republic?
« on: December 27, 2016, 10:04:06 AM »
Does anyone know what varieties are being grown/ exist in the Dominican Republic?

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a Christmas gathering with my brother in law and his family who are from DM. Thank 10lb,11oz golden fleeced baby Jesus that they cooked a pork roast with traditional Dominican favorites as I could not eat one more bite of turkey, mashed potatoes or green bean casserole.  I brought them a house warming gift  of a rossiglod and a Harvest moon for there new place. So naturally the subject of mangoes was a common interest. My question for the forum members is.......

If my wife and I wanted to buy a piece of land in DM and grow mangoes there as a profitable business what would be the best varieties to grow and would I be able to import them or be stuck with local varieties?

I knew this day would come but had no idea I would be considering it already. I have 21 trees not all of them in the ground yet, (need to open some sky up). Several of them I have not had the good fortune to try and bought them  based of the reviews and respected opinions of others, mostly reading through this forum. So I call upon thee Oh mango connoisseurs, aficionados, and snobs alike.  Please furnish your opinions as to who might get traded to another yard. I'll try to rank in my personal descending order and in ground (IG) or pot.

Coconut cream       #1 as of yet, 1 (IG) and 1- 15g pot
Maha schanok          (IG) tried it really liked it.
Valencia pride           (IG) simple but one of my favs.
KDM                         (IG) like it a lot, wife loves it, but 3gl IG x1 year.
Cogshall                  (IG) 3gl, potted 15. I might swap the two. sell the small one.
Carrie                       (IG) great tree , wife doesn't care for it, I'm 50/50
Lemon Merengue       (IG) cant wait to try it but also have a LZ in a pot.
Glen                         (IG) pretty good, need to eat a lot more to be sure, wife really likes it.
Southern blush          (IG) seamed like a watered down coconut cream to me?
Juliette                     (IG) cant wait to try one.
Mystery mango         (IG) might be a new variety for the U.S., I'll let you know in a few years.

Beverly                     (pot) pretty darn good late one
Fruit punch               (pot) never tried it but got a monster 25gl.
Lemon Zest              (pot) 7gl was the best bang for the buck, cant wait to try one.
peach cob                (pot) best 7gl I could find, cant wait to try one.
Pickering                 (pot) 25gl never had one but I could always leave it in the pot.
Pina collada             (pot) 25gl couldn't resist, have a bottle of rum with it's name on it, cant wait to try it.
Graham                   (pot) ate one from the freezer yesterday, really like it don't know how it will compare to other islandy varieties.
Keitt                        (pot) 3gl probably gift it away
Cotton candy            (pot) 3gl

I intend to put them all in the ground if I can make enough room and I was thinking about Phoenix, Kathy, sweet tart, Rosigold, choc anon, Ambrosia, Gary, Angie, Ice cream?

I'm stuck at work on Christmas eve hence the spare time.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone recognize this mango?
« on: December 18, 2016, 12:47:56 PM »
So I bought a grafted tree from puerto rico ( ebay) this summer based on The claim that it would produce the mangos pictured. Claimed to be an unknown variety by the seller who was selling several other grafted and we'll know premium varieties. Further questioning revealed that the man in The picture known only as "Paco" grafted a few trees from the tree In His back yard. The fruit is ginormous and was said to have little to no fiber sweet/tangy and we'll balanced. Obviously the fruit is real as for the rest only time will tell. Any ides on what it could be as far as a known cultivator?
