Surprisingly good for packaged fruit.

Nice fruits! Maybe the packaging prevents bruising or oxidation that causes the browning? I don't know how that works lol.

That's a hard question for me since my taste buds are about 90% shot thanks to a couple of heart attacks but texture wise it's thicker than a lychee and tastes like lychee/pear/grape with a slight astringent note and not very juicy. Remember that these where shipped and aren't at their peak taste. I did enjoy them.

Dont forget the irradiation.

Did the flesh stick to the seed?

Out of all the Rambutan I have tasted that were  purchased in Florida,  I would pick a nice, fresh ripe lychee any day of the week.

Rob. You're right. Me too. Although there might be a big taste difference in a fresh one.

Agree with Rob.  I will eat rambutan and enjoy it.  But if lychees were on the table as well, I'd go for them.  I have come across some very tasty and sweet rambutan in PR.  Juan has a seedling that was incredibly sweet and flavorful.  Ian has a couple of really nice flavored ones as well but his yellow is by far my favorite.  Of course, these are all right off the tree.

I thought a lot of the rambutan coming into the states was from Guatemala...not sure if they have to irradiate or not.

The package labels didn't state that they were irradiated.

Are they from Central America? Some places there are considered fruit fly free and do not require irradiation.

You would probably need to see the box they came in.

Rambutan from Guatemala is not irradiated.

Tree picked mamon chino vs. imported are not comparable, and if all you have eaten is import quality in Florida, then expect a much juicier and hopefully free stone type fruit if you travel to the tropics.

I have tried the ones from South Central America (not irradiated) and they are no better in quality.  Still would go with a lychee.

Think you must have meant Central America? Don't think there is any South American country exporting rambutan.
