Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soursop on Rollinia?
« on: February 03, 2019, 04:12:04 PM »
The information is probably on here somewhere but I thought it quicker to ask. Has anyone tried and succeeded with grafting soursop onto Rollinia rootstock? I had a couple of spare scions and it was either try it or waste them.

Felipe is yours a seedling or grafted? How old till it started fruiting?

Must admit I can’t make out the black Sapote issue from the photo, their stems do turn from green to quite dark naturally. My guess with the Jackfruit is just a bit chilly, my small plants don’t love winter, should start to pick up with the warmer weather

Some of the Garcinias are worth considering

Is the seedless variety out there and available somewhere Mike?

There seems to be a bunch of new varieties out with not much info about them. Makes it tough to do your homework ;)

Ulfr do you know much about the quality of fruit that Red Ball produces? I believe they get to a reasonable size as well

I hope you have better luck with yours Rob, not sure if that’s the yellow I got from you but mine turned out to look just the same as my regular yellow mega. Only had one fruit last season and it was good, fortunately I like the regular yellows anyway

Hi Rob, is yours a grafted or seedling star apple? I have a seedling about 4 years old but no idea how long it may take to flower.

Very interesting to read your post Rob, particularly because I have a grafted Lyndall which is still too young to fruit. I have a seedling tree and a Ross as well so hopefully one day I’ll be able to compare a few varieties of this fruit I have really grown to enjoy.
I am curious to know how long the grafted Lyndall took to fruit for you?

Cheers for the overview Mike, it had been quite puzzling to me (still is) but all least I have some context to understand it in. I have a recently grafted Orange Sherbet which is suffering some fungal disease while my other 3 (KP derivatives) are fine and thriving. It will be interesting to watch how things progress

Makes me wonder how well the quality US varieties translate in Australia? Any one with experience?

I’m sure there is some history explaining this but with all the talk of great mangos, Kensington Pride gets no mention. Does it not grow well in the USA?

I have 4 Jackfruit seedlings in pots outside, 3 are from seeds of a fruit I ate and all of them handled the winter here a little worse for wear but ok really. The one J33 seedling I have had to bring inside, no where as tolerant of the cold

Yeah John Picone has a large fruiting tree inside his netted area just outside Byron Bay Northern NSW

Not wishing to throw too much confusion into the mix but for me in the very north of nsw my Secondo producers the very best avos I have tasted. They are a fairly large fruit and ripen here from now till September, my other avo is a Lamb and they are both prolific

I have had good success with grafting generally but have had no luck with my limited attempts with Jackfruit and Starapple. I am wondering if it is due to the excess sap when I cut them ? My Canistels and Ross plants grafted well with plenty of white sap though, any ideas/tips are welcome as I will be trying again in a few months

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Black sapote spacing and size control
« on: December 17, 2017, 02:41:00 PM »
I keep mine to about 12-14 feet. It is a seedling and vigorous grower but my yard isn’t large so I have to control size. The difficulty with this tree is that it is setting some of its fruit while some of previous crop is still maturing, My method is to prune back branches once I have harvested fruit from branch extremitys. If no fruit on a branch I cut it back early, some I cut back close to the fruit, occasionally I sacrifice fruit high up to control height. I still get plenty of fruit with this approach, about 80 fruit this season with the biggest 1.2kg

Any experiences with grafting onto Rollinia? I am looking to graft onto my Rollinia and am wondering what is possible?

I have heard that cincturing can help control size, but on the small experiments I have done have seen little evidence of this.

Hey Ric, how do you rate the fruit of the Delight? I had only one spot left to plant and had to choose between Delight, Purple Haze and Physical Graffiti. I planted the Delight but still have the other two. Any thoughts?

With my yellow megalanthus they taste good from 40% yellow to fully yellow.
