Hello. I'm looking to buy seeds of Mexicola, Stewart or any other Mexican avocado variety. I need them to be Mexican for cold tolerance, so the hardier the better.
-
The season starts in July and there are many native varieties. There are seeds that are really big but we can try to get you some
-
Thank you that would be awesome.
-
Some cold tolerant avocados are Fuerte and Bacon. They can stand -3C.
Fuerte you can buy in the shops sometimes, they are a good rootstock.
I have grafted plants, but I can't send plants outside EU. Maybe scions if you are interested, but not now, only during spring or fall.
-
Unfortunately, -3 is not enough. My only option is a Mexican variety seedling, and scions won't do, as I need a Mexican rootstock anyway. Maybe graft something onto that later on, and of course I would prefer a grafted Mexican variety rather than a seedling, but this is hardly an option for me due to transportation and customs issues, so growing a Mexican variety seedling is my only option.

Curious, do you know this avocado grower in Mexico? He grows the typical criolo varieties, all are named varieties. https://www.facebook.com/jaime.gonzalez.900388?__tn__=%2CdlC-R-R&eid=ARBq9MEg4CRtHJaQJV-ERVkTV_slqF8oh7bRQ2MRH5L4FJoDe_suzTDFllJ2JlJpx6r-kqTnTWzh7Opg&hc_ref=ARSm137MJLu4gTrAkjARILAiA71ufnyzZqxSxexNBpL13CJTcMxN28eFYVBo1NWflZw (https://www.facebook.com/jaime.gonzalez.900388?__tn__=%2CdlC-R-R&eid=ARBq9MEg4CRtHJaQJV-ERVkTV_slqF8oh7bRQ2MRH5L4FJoDe_suzTDFllJ2JlJpx6r-kqTnTWzh7Opg&hc_ref=ARSm137MJLu4gTrAkjARILAiA71ufnyzZqxSxexNBpL13CJTcMxN28eFYVBo1NWflZw)

You might look for Duke or Aravaipa seeds -- take a look at JoeReal's posts on this forum. They will have the kind of cold tolerance you're looking for.

I don't know about Duke, but I've read on this forum that Aravaipa doesn't taste very good.
-
I do not know him, but take a look at his channel, he has a great variety of avocados. A passionate about that crop.

Bump. It's July already so I suppose the season has already started. Anyone got Mexican avocado seeds to sell?

The earliest Mexican type avocados in California that I know of are Duke, which fruit in September (maybe some are ready in August), and Mexicola isn't too much later.
-
OK. Hardy Platas said up there that the season starts in July.

Yeah, it makes sense that it would be earlier in Mexico because they are further South.

It’s September already, so I was wondering if anyone has seeds for sale now?
-
I will have stewart and bacon seeds in october - december.
-
OK, great, will contact you then.

I tasted my first Aravaipa in San Diego while visiting family for Thanksgiving; their neighbors had a tree in their yard. I thought the fruit was quite good, although a bit watery. It was the last fruit of the season from the tree, so the photos aren't great because they had it in the fridge, already peeled and cut.

Interesting to hear that the aravaipa fruit tasted watery, i never tryed one so i dont know. Are they pretty sure it is a genuine aravaipa ? Do you know if they bought tree from shamus in phoenix area ?
-
Did you ever find your seeds i might have bacon seeds avail for 50 cents each plus ship cost, approx how many seeds are you after, Duke seed season over in northern cal and pretty hard to find at least for me.I have duke trees but going to be years before i get any fruit.
-
Yes, it's a genuine Aravaipa. The couple who own it are knowledgeable, long-time botanists & fruit growers. They didn't get it from Shamus; a friend grafted it for them. They currently have a batch of Aravaipa seeds germinating in their greenhouse to try as rootstocks; I believe part of the project involves grafting Aravaipa scions onto Aravaipa seedlings, although I'm not sure what their ultimate goal is as I was mostly focused on tasting the fruit. As far as the taste, I should clarify my earlier comment by saying it was only slightly watery--nothing I found in the least objectionable. I will be very pleased indeed if my Aravaipa ever produces fruit approaching that quality.
-
Tucsonken thanks for writing more detail on taste of aravaipa fruit it sounds like its not too bad i hear mixed reports what it taste like, it doesnt sound any worse than taste of a duke, i have both trees in my collection as i have an interest in cold hardy types that taste decent, im wondering if aravaipa fruit is about same as a bacon fruit which can have a bit of watery taste and mild taste.Do you know if they have an interest in selling me a few aravaipa seeds and what was the seed like on the small or large side ?
-
Here's another informed opinion on the taste of Aravaipa. I suspect he may be talking about the same tree I saw in San Diego:
"Hi Ken, I'm a former chairman of the San Diego CRFG group. One of our elders has a 10-12 foot tree here. It produces a fruit that is very close to a Fuerte in every respect, thin skinned, small-medium seed, good flavor, creamy, etc. I was not expecting it to be a good taster due to the cold hardiness (you don't typically get both). Growth habit seems "normal" not lateral or columnar, but balanced...Check out my page if you want more from me: https://www.facebook.com/SuburbanFoodFarm (https://www.facebook.com/SuburbanFoodFarm)

I'm pretty sure they don't have any seed available to sell, since they were all in the process of being germinated when I was there in November.

Yes, I have found some Stewart seeds so I'm good for the moment.

To nexxogen, let us know how your stewart seeds do for you ive tryed mexicola before and got a very small- slow growing seedling, but seed was super tiny so i guess it that fits, the seedling in pot though so suspect if in the ground it would likely grow much better.
-
Looks healthy, Avoman! Good luck with both of them! What's your ultimate plan in such a chilly climate--do you have a greenhouse?
-
I have acres in foothills out of central valley cali so will be planted in ground there down the road, i grow in my house now, have no greenhouse till i get moved.
