Be careful out there... the heat is here.
« on: May 05, 2019, 12:29:54 PM »
Be careful working outside. I was an idiot today and spent too long in the sun chopping a tree down and then feeding in through the chipper/mulcher.

All of a sudden I felt my heart racing and started getting light-headed. By the time I made it indoors I could barely balance myself. Thankfully my wife got me a couple ice packs and damn near a bottle of gatorade. Spent 20 minutes in a cold shower and I can finally move around again. Scary stuff. My eyes are all bloodshot and I'm red all over, but overall doing ok now.

Make sure you have lots of water out there and don't overdo it... summer is here!

I don't know how you folks stand living in FL in the summertime. I was raised in Sanford back when about the only places with air conditioning were the banks and the church on Sunday morning. When I got out of high school I spent a few years checking out climate options, then I beat it up to the NC mountains to live where the weather was relatively tolerable. But THEN . . . ahhhhhhhh . . . to the mountains of Costa Rica! Paradise!!

I bring 2 gallons of water with me and sometimes a 64oz smoothie with me in the summer for workdays. Long sleeve white spf shirt, sun hat with the neck mullet cloth on it and some lightweight Columbia or athletic shorts. Sometimes I wont piss all day. It can be brutal at times but I sure love watching how fast everything grows.

Our summers are brutal, that's for sure.  Make that May to Ocotober!  If we didn't get to eat mangos, there would be no point living here!

Become acclimated and dress with evaporative clothing, take breaks for cooling and hydration this chart helps monitor hydration.

It's nutty hot out there. Seems like we skipped from April directly into July.

It took me about seven years to become truly acclimated after moving from California.  I know people who didn't wait that long and left.  Also, there were no mosquitoes in L.A.!

I think I'd rather take our dry occasional 125 degree day and 110 degree August average than 90-95 degree high humidity days in the south. I remember visiting a family member in Shreveport during the summer years ago. Wow. I don't know how you guys do it.

I concur. My place has a lot of mosquitoes now. It's weird to have them here since it's dry and arid.

I live near a river in a farm town that grows rice and we have a lot of standing water from the rains. It''s a nasty year for mosquitos. I bought a few citronella plants to put around my patio and burn citronella torches. As long as my wife is outside the mosquitos leave me alone :)

Simple garden hose is your friend.
Your needed water is actually outside your body. Soak your head and all yourself with your garden hose. Might have to work barefoot. I do this every 20-30 minutes or so. _____  I practice what I am saying.

IOW work drenched and semi-drenched when it is so hot outside.  In South Florida and elsewhere.

I like the heat and humidity. So easy to break a sweat. No need to goto the gym. Just spend 15 - 20 minutes in the yard and you're good.

Hydration is essential. Body needs salt to retain water, which is one of my main food groups so get plenty.

Mosquitos are pita and difficult to control here. We have a Dynatrap, citronella and other mosquito deterring plants, but still have to use a handheld zapper to take out the stubborn holdouts. Usually, after zapping a few, won't be bothered for a while. Sweet sense of satisfaction hearing that popping noise. If people are coming over for a party or cookout, we usually spray some natural mosquito deterrent around the yard, which lasts for about a day.
