Jak & Coconuts
« on: January 18, 2012, 08:51:35 PM »
Here's some recent photos from my yard. That's a twin fruit set of J-31 jakfruit and Malayan Yellow coconut palm. It has a bunch of cocos. The water goes great with Cutty Sark Scotch whiskey.

Your nuts look amazing.  ;)

I will don't understand how Harry does not like coconut water.

Do you think those jackfruit will survive the rest of the winter?

Nice! I've drank water from a green type coconut and I didn't like it. Then I drank water from an orange coconut (not sure what type) and it was sweet. I liked that coconut water.

The flavor of coconut water varies tree to tree, bunch to bunch, even within the same coconut depending when you pick it. There has never really been on color that I preferred over the others, instead there is an age of the coconut I prefer. It is when there is some jelly and is soft enough to be eaten with a spoon and still being somewhat translucent.

Agree, the water, and even the flesh, is best from a young coconut.

Noel...try roasting some young ones.  Cut the top for a lid, shave off some flesh to mingle in with the liquid.  Wife, her family, and Warren loved this.  It was so-so for me.

That is one big-arse jak. It doesn't seem to be weighing you down, though. Are you especially strong?  Or is the jak hollow????   ;)

It's actually neither of those. He is just a really tiny man. About 3 1/2 ft tall. That's why all his fruit always look so big.

Noel,
Is that huge jackfruit from your yard?  :o I'm so jealous of you S. Fla people being able to grow it.
Thank YOU for some nice Annona seedlings, by way of Ethan.  I love A. squamosas. Don't know when or if mine will ever fruit, but they're happily growing.

Those coconuts sure look good, I wonder if your tree is similar to these.  They're a bit more green than Noel's, dwarf too I think.

I think that's a dwarf green malayan coconut. I had one in the backyard of my old house in west pines.

^Can that be a dwarf green malayan coconut?

I believe that is it.  It's also the drinking coconut of choice in Vietnam, at least that's what I was limited to when I visited.

That's a pretty cool tree.  I'd like to have the folks in Thailand find a few like that.  Beats the hell out of trying to climb up a tall tree or wait until one konks you on the head!  Does it stay dwarf or will it eventually just keep going up.  I notice the trunk on that one is pretty big.

Noel,
In Northeast Brazil, we make ice cubes with coconut water and then, we add some scotch. Yummy!

That's a good idea. Will have to try one day.

I've seen on television that adding and spreading coconut water onto the skin of the pig while its roasting, makes the skin itself extra crunchy and delicious.

Mine first produced fruit when it was only 4 foot tall. It's pretty tall right now so I need a ladder to harvest but the water is excellent, much better than that boxed coco water crap that they sell in the markets. Fresh is BEST

In Puerto Rico, frozen coconut water cubes are also very popular. We call that "Limber"

Actually, that's a Puerto Rican drink called Coquito.  I've tasted it before. Some people compare it to Egg Nog, but I think Coquito is 100 times better. :)

Alexi, of course coquito!!!!! The pic doesn't do it justice, 100x's better than eggnog for sure!
In the Caribbean we sure use coconut a lot. I should plant one!
