salacca palm in S Cal

Has anyone fruited this in Southern California?

If you're growing this, can you share your experience?

I got 5 salacca pondoh seeds from Oscar that are starting to germinate.

I have potted S. affinis, wallichiana and zalacca, they are in 7gallon pots and seem to grow very nice throughout most of the year.  They have seen the mid 40F in their lives and not been bothered by it.  They have also been completely bare rooted and seemed to handle it fine despite me doing it late summer.  All in all relatively tough plants, just watch the thorns!

Have a few Salacca zalacca seedlings outside zone 10b in a 50-70% shaded area. The plants don't really enjoy the tap water, but they push on with good amendments (worm castings a few times a month). 4-6 month old seedlings seem to be hanging in there with a low of about 38 degrees so far.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Do you know some recipe to prepare snake fruit, because out of hand, it has pretty awful/nasty  taste?

I've only eaten them once but they were pretty good. Maybe you got a bad variety.

You must have had an unripe or bad quality , I did not taste a lot of varieties but all that I tasted were really good and crunchy

I've never had salak, my dad tells me taste bud tempting stories about an apple-pineapple like flavor that inhabits the crunchy flesh.

To me those salak seeds look underripe...very bitter (astringent?)not even edible. When those seeds are darker color and slightly shriveled...that's the best tasting time.  They will have a slight sweet aroma by then too.
