Hey Ryan, you growing this one too? Pics if you gottem!
Hey Rob,
Not growing this one but have read up Joe H
He recently posted a picture over on fb. It seems like it’s only the first few sets after sprouting😓.

E. labisia has turned out to be a really beautiful addition to our collection. Nothing quite like it. No idea how the fruits are, but doesn't even matter looking this good.

...added a "few" others, lol. Coming at you Kevin!
You’ll be in for a treat the next few flushes…the leaves will turn complete green😅

Your best bet would be Kaz. He has a lot of different varieties and the ones you are looking for.

If not, I can supply you some Australian green from my grafted plant from Kaz's cuttings lol.

The race is OFFICIALLY on between Nate, Ryan, and I to fruiting.
Bet. Winner should get something from the other two ;D
I'll throw in a rare plinia of some sort LOL

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Arbequina olive in zone 7b?
« on: October 19, 2023, 11:22:11 PM »
I like the idea except it gets too cold in 7b for olives. You may get lucky a few years, but eventually it will die without protection.
You could keep it as a potted plant and bring it into the garage when it goes below 20f.
You could also keep it outside in ground and protect it when there are cold snaps. I left mine outside and it made it on year, another year it died back to the base, and then last year it died to the cold.
They will fruit in a pot.

356
Lol it actually do be more like this for me:

LOL I didn't even mention campomanesias... I do not mess with those and do not want to join the campo club. I have 2 though ::)
But yeah it's good to diversify, and a lot of the cerrado guavas seem like they will not take much space unlike my regular pink guava.
Definitely a win for indoor and greenhouse growers.

357
Don't sleep on these deals! They will be gone before long.
Quality plants!

358
Went in on a fairly similar box

Looking great!

Ultra rareness from David.
Psidium schenkianum
Sorobancabense
And many other rarities!

360
I think they will be ok. I’d advise them to plant them as soon as possible as they take forever to sprout.
I got a few from Brian Laufer, and they haven’t sprouted after a year…which I hear is normal.

361
A lot of his reviews on the fruits tastes were off...
Come on...why you gotta do that?
And that's not rare fruit to a lot of us in the fruit community...Only to outsiders it's rare.
It was interesting to watch though lol.

362
My friend David has been carrying out some of the newest psidiums in the US. While I'm mostly focused on plinias, he has not neglected the psidiums at all.
Check out his sale thread. Get some rareness! Crazy to think that a lot of the new stuff available is through zone pushers lol. Don't underestimate us.

Sure, we grow it. But by ‘nobody’ you mean those living in unsuitable areas?
Peter
Peter,
how do you rate the fruit?
Better than mango?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: why are my bananas small?
« on: October 16, 2023, 09:06:15 AM »
Thanks folks, for all the tips!
I was suspecting that pot size was probably the most limiting factor.  I do feed it extremely heavily and lots of water.

As for plant size, it is ceiling height - 10' 6". The pseudostem is over 8 inches across at the base, and is over my head height. I "train" the leaves to bend down with a  weighted hook my hubby made, so it doesn't try to push through the roof.
I would love to plant it in the ground, but I have a hard time because of our huge maple tree roots.  I also worry about soil temps and our heavy clay soil.  But I may try seeing if I can make a hole this go-round.
Does the hole need to be deep? Maybe I could try a raised bed, and give it more width.

Epicatt, you said your plant bloomed several times? I always whack mine down after fruiting. I thought bananas only bloomed once... am I jumping the gun?
Whatever mine is, I will keep saving a pup a year and making tasty little bananas.

Carolyn
Root makers could be an option,
Also, you could buy another small plant so you don't have to dig a large hole. The plant will gradually figure it out.

I'd say pot size is the limiting factor for you. Trees with larger root systems will produce more fruit. Maybe if you can plant it in ground I'd say the fruit size would get larger.

366
If no one takes the cambuca or pouteria, I’ll pick them up this December.

367
It’s very good. Smells better than it tastes. There is a selection my friend has that tastes like rum.
I rate it very highly.

368
Bump.
I have a decent amount of stuff that has to go.
Large stuff. If you can make the drive the prices are dirt cheap. Large grumichama for $50
Huge rose apple for $50 many other trees cheap.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Selling many garcinia parvifolia seeds
« on: October 12, 2023, 05:51:01 PM »
Hey so I don’t like to sell stuff that’s bad, but with stuff this rare something must be done.
I got some garcinia parvifolia seeds. After cracking 10 or so open I got about 3-4 ones that were ok. And that was about two weeks ago.
Selling a lot of 90 for $35 included shipping. Best,
Ryan

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: $2500 for seedlings
« on: October 12, 2023, 10:30:12 AM »
Wallets out, y'all!
The $10,000 Duguetia seedling is here!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1536875292/duguetia-furfuracea-extremely-rare?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=duguetia+furfuracea&ref=sr_gallery-1-2&frs=1&cns=1&organic_search_click=1

Make sure to buy it now because there will never ever ever ever ever be another Duguetia available in the US again. I should have never given my plants to a friend, I would've been a millionaire!  /s
I'll put down $1000 for the community duguetia. Let's all pitch in and grow it in a communal greenhouse.

Is there a tree at fruit and spice or another public garden?

I probably have a couple germinating ones.
The season for olosapo is over in FL. It's normally june/july
I know there's one at the F and S park.
The fruit on that tree didn't taste as good though compared to my friend's tree.
Which ironically is a seedling from the one at the F and S park.

373
Thank you Jaboticaba.

I've actually seen Promix BX and Fafard 51 recommended as good soils to use for starting out oaks. This is another project I have ,   germinating oaks, chestnuts, and persimmons to plant out on the property.  I'm still trying to track down who carries either Promix BX, or Fafard down by me (Loxahatchee , FL ). I'm going to start calling around the nurseries and see if any carry them.

I have one more question, regarding the containers. I'm thinking of going the route of the large fabric pots. I've used them in the past and worked out well for a duration of around  2 years.  Any experience with using them for long term use?

Thank you

Would love to hear how chestnuts do for you down that far south.
You can get bulk promix cheap where you are at the diamond R store I believe.
Instead of fabric, many people hear opt to use root maker pots.
There are several threads on that. I personally like them. The downsides is that they dry out fast and it's tough to repot plants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: The secret to growing a healthy Pitomba?
« on: October 10, 2023, 09:57:14 PM »
I think it surely has to be climate.
Mine is super happy up here with high humidity and warm temps.
I neglected it but it's doing great in a container.

Hey Jose,
welcome to the forum.
There are many members here who grow plants indefinitely in pots.
The trick is to make sure the soil doesn't become anaerobic.
Soil will break down over the years so you could potentially do a soil swap on old trees.
I've started to use Promix on all my plants as I can see a difference in growth.
But any mix that is high quality like fafard will work.
Even the miracle grow potting soil is good stuff if you can't find anything else.
