is this a Eugenia?
« on: April 11, 2021, 05:23:10 PM »
I saw this tree at a local plant store and it has no label.  The leaves look similar to eugenia or garcinia to me.  It has a few small berries.   Looking online a bit it looks very much like allspice but not exactly... the allspice berries I see in photos look to change directly from green to purple while this has red transition, and the fruit stems look slightly different.  If it is something worthwhile I might go back and see if it is for sale, they were too busy today.

The color of the new growth reminds me of a Syzygium, like rose apple, but I think Syzygiums have opposite leaves.

Nate I think you may be right, the berries look exactly right for those.  Says ornamental, invasive, not known for any edible use.  Oh well.  Glad I didn't try to buy it :)

I can't find any pictures of new leaf growth for this... my picture definitely shows the reddish new leaves I see on eugenias and garcinias.  My only syzygium doesn't look much like this, not sure about others.

The berries are sweet and edible, but not much to eat. We grow this to attract and feed birds!
