Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Mangos from India Grown in Florida?
« on: September 03, 2022, 06:59:37 PM »
My favorite Indian mango is Alampur Baneshan. Taste like nothing else and the flesh is more whitish than any other mango I’ve seen. Also Mallika is very good. I disagree, if you let it ripe on the tree it tastes bad. It just tastes different from harvested green and ripened later. Love them both! Although, overripe Mallika might taste like carrots. Lol.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf longan
« on: September 03, 2022, 06:51:19 PM »
Does anyone know anything about a dwarf longan. There are some old fruiting trees in Sarasota area that are no more than 10-15 ft tall with low bushing growth habit. Although, don’t know for sure if it is the same species as Dimocarpus longan. Pics attached.

Is there anyone in Florida who grows Genipa?

7
Who else is growing Genipa americana in Florida? My tree is small but with the rain it’s growing fast. I planted it under the high canopy of live oaks.

Please, share your observations. What is the lowest temperature that your Genipa americana went through?

D. pruriens made it through winter with light covering last year here-

Dropped its leaves though

Could you please give more specifics? What were the lowest temps where you are? What do you mean by light covering? Thank you

I'm growing Davidson's plum (Davidsonia Pruriens), quite easy to grow and to fruit, usually fruits twice a year (in March-May & July-October), 4 years from seed. Tall tree (Pruriens), grows like a palm. I shake the tree to get fruits when ready. Very acidic fruit and looks like a regular plum. Extra watering and mulching helps. I use Espoma Holly tone fertilizer.
Seeds are flat and very thin. I do not sell seeds (only plants when available, not all seeds germinate).

Thank you for the info. Much appreciated.

What about Davidsonia jerseyana? This species is from NE New South Wales (a lot further south than tropical Queensland), might be reasonable to expect better cold tolerance?

I would assume that will be VERY hard to find outside of Australia.

That I know!
But at what point do I harvest purple fruits for the optimum taste?

Check with Excalibur (although Palm Beach County).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pouteria dominigensis question

Well there's a lot of species with the name Domingensis out there so idk about that.

Where did you get this plant btw?

Yes and that’s why it is easier to follow nomenclature accepted by one of the world’s authorities like Kew Gardens.

I got the seedling from a friend. Not sure where he got the seeds.

Pouteria Domingensis=Totuma

It's Domingensis...there are typos floating around. Seems there's P.Domingensis subsp Domingensis with Longer leaves such as this one and there's a subsp Cuprea with rounder leaves? http://cedaf.org.do/arboles_dominicanos/index_ncomun.php?comun=Totuma
That's all the info for now until i find more from old books...

The fruit tastes more like a wild canistel and it's a nice lil thing and not bad...but cannot compete against the larger pouterias. I had a couple of seeds but never sold em as some seeds got confiscated so i've stopped selling seeds. But still go ahead fruit this thing and sell it over there as you will be one of the few selling these eh.

Thank you for the info! Really appreciate it. This fruit is so little known and yet it is native to Florida and Greater Antilles.

Regarding the name. I believe the epithet name “dominigensis” is correct and not a typo like the other one. I verify all scientific names through World Checklist of Selected Plant Families. Pouteria dominigensis is an accepted name. https://wcsp.science.kew.org/qsearch.do

Does anyone know what is the lowest temperature this tree can tolerate? I grow several palms from those islands, hoping it can grow where I am.
