Another rewarding Borneo fruit trip
« on: December 12, 2018, 01:17:10 PM »
Still here hunting for kutejensis. Bummed the Kesusu were not ripe , but still have seen and eaten some great fruits, my second time to Borneo. Thanks to frank Sekiya in 2003 for inspiring me to come here/ only in recent years did I make it a reality. These new tropical fruit lover elitists like the ‘fit shortie eats’ people act like it’s something new that Borneo is a hot spot for rare tropical fruits when really people like Frankie were coming here decades ago to gather seeds and budwood to bring back to Hawaii. Anyways , I’m surely hooked and will be back for round 3, Kalimantan edition maybe next time

Thanks. By the way, the mangifera sp. I think is m. caesia. The flavor is kind of weird and not that pleasant. the tampoi or baccaurea sp. was ok but nothing special for me. Also, the red fleshed graveolens is rather bland tasting out of all the other durios I have tasted. It’s fun to try and nice to see but I dont buy it more than once when I come here

Looks like a great trip.  What areas are you visiting in Borneo on this one?

Kota Kinabalu, Tenom, Lawas, Sandakan (for orangutans, not fruit), Miri and surrounding areas.

We had a terrific Kutejensis at the agro park in Tenom, really one of the best fruits of our trip there.  However, this was in August, so don’t know if that tree would have fruit now.  Also the tree is in an area outside of the public gardens but you can get someone to take you there.

i already went there, thats where the unripe kesusu and kura-kura was. did you have other kutejensis to compare? i have been finding a lot in Miri, and I find that i really enjoy them, i ate one this morning, and a mangosteen after, it was an explosion of flavor in my mouth like I had never had before

Hi, no, that was the only Kutejensis we had.  But we found a terrific oxylianus in Sepitang after having very normal, not so impressive ones near KL.  The durio can vary, so you have to keep trying!  Not that you wouldn’t want to.
