Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: psidium myrtoides
« on: June 01, 2016, 07:16:23 PM »
I got this one last year from San Diego.  It is doing well in Northern California and appears to be cold and heat hardy.  No fruit yet, but mine in only like a foot and a half tall and a weeping type habit a bit.

127
Black Sapote I think won't make it in ground.  They get hardier with size, but mine still arn't all year hardy in Bay Area.

128
I've kept some of that stuff alive outside all year, but in pots directly next to house under overhang.

If you can wait until winter then maybe try a CRFG exchange.  Sticks are free and the ones I've been to usually have persimmon.

I think there is no Longan at that Fremont Park.  The lower pic looks like Davidson's Plum.  That said I bet Longan is doable in Fremont.  Fremont and Hayward benefit from a lack of cold as well as some heat.  They buck the tred of warer areas, colder winters in the Bay Area.  Tropical Guavas are doable in a lot of Bay Area places.

Not the best person to ask, but looks like you might have G. xanthochymus and Imbe among those.

132
Barath if you think it would be worthwhile I can give a few Osage Oranges for the planting if you think Che has a chance.  It's a low heat area right?

Thanks for the suggestions.  I figured in a worst case I would drive in from SLO or Goleta.  I can do hour and a half drives, but would just be a pain in the ass especially in the evening.  In a super worse case I would just drive in for a day I guess.  I really want to see some of th tours probably since SLO is getting "north" and probably closer to the tpye of stuff I can grow.  Kind of wish it wasn't being held during peak tourist season.

I plan to go, but not sure where I will stay.  Looks like Central Coast CA is even more expensive then San Diego in August.

There's a problem with lemon thieves some places.

Ben Poirier had some stuff like Star Fruit and Cherimoya in Feb at the Vista Farmer's Market.  Said he has Black Sapotes when in season.  I'm going to be going down in mid June too so if I go first I will let you know what I see.

137
They need chill, but do fruit in San Diego so probably low chill.  Up here I notice they leaf out after heat so maybe more complicated then just straight up chill hours?

I saw some at a LA nursery last year, but they didn't look great and winter was coming so I passed.

139
Degelman and Biew Kiew are relatively small and in 15 gallon pots, but have flower spikes.  Kohala is just growing new leaves.

140
I will try that, but I get the rot even if I stop watering/no rain.  Babaco makes it through fine though. I am trying Oak Leaf Papaya this year so we will see on that one.

141
Maybe I should try this one.  Mine always get the root rot in winter.

I lost my tree due to lack of water in summer, but it took my Northern CA winters OK.  I have 3 seedlings again.   Is fruit taste pretty standard?  Good to see I can graft if I get all males.

Does anyone grow Podocarpus species?  Any opinions on the best species for fruit?

I got one from Dennis at Festival of Fruit.  Hasn't grown a lot yet, but made it through a NorCal winter.

I can't speak specifically on that one, but I have seen supposed "cold hardy avos" growing next to walls, building, and heat sinks before.

Yeah I have noticed that I can grow a number of things that would b impossible a few decades ago in the Bay Area.  For instance I never see frost in the morning anymore which would be common in the 80's.  Even mangos that have the same kill temperture, but tolerate lower temps better would probably expand the range a bit here in warm pockets.

My seedlings produced earlier, but ones male and ones female.  Maybe check your local CRFG chapter members?  Yours may produce in a year or two.  You can cut a flower in half to see it it is a specific sex or both.

Yeah so I had heard that as long as it's self fertilized or fertilized with the same variety things can be pretty stable.  as very similiar to the parent even with pink flesh so there might be something to it.
