Title: Avocado Varieties and their leaf characteristics

I have a seedling avocado with rounded leaves and am looking for info on identifying the genetic heritage of this type of avocado.

Post a picture, sounds interesting. I have an avocado with skinny long leaves, also a seedling.

Here's my update.
One seedling has fat leaves, the other has thin/skinny leaf.

there tends to be a lot of variation.  doubtful you can come up with "genetic heritage" by the shape of the leaves.  Maybe its more mexican if it has rounder leaves but theres really no telling.  If I was guessing, the pics posted by Kaz look like a mexican bacon type on top and a guatemalan reed type on bottom.  of course those are just guesses based on how those trees look and how the seedlings I grew looked. 

if your tree is mature and fruitful, looking at the fruit would be a better way to gauge what race it is.

These are all Hass seedlings (grown as rootstock for greenhouse trees), so I'm pretty sure it's going to be nearly impossible to identify a seedling's lineage by leaf appearance alone:

Most Mexican-race avocados (Persea americana var. drymifolia) have a distinctive anise scent when you crush the leaves, so you can use that to narrow things slightly.

Brad, you are correct on the top seedling, its from a Bacon fruit.

The bottom seedling could be from your Reed fruits you sent me last year, I'm not sure about the fruit seeds of this one since I planted all the seeds from the avocado fruits you sent.

Love this thread guys, I have been sprouting the seeds I get my hands on from store bought and friends trees and really enjoy looking at the leaf variation, I’ll try to get a picture this weekend when it’s sunny.
