Panama Red passion fruit question here.
« on: November 11, 2020, 08:07:17 PM »
Planted early this year, it's now a monster to where I'm pruning it. It's also been flowering like crazy, why is it not producing fruit? Is it not self fertile? There's a Frederick's passion fruit  entangling with it but not flowering yet. When the Frederick's blooms will it pollinate the panama red and vise versa?

You might need to hand pollinate it. Passionfruit flowers often need hand pollination, or big carpenter or bumble bees to set fruit, because of the shape of the flower.

My most productive self fertile passionfruit, 1 plant gives maybe 200 fruit per season.

I have a couple passion fruit plants, and I would love to grow them in the same way over a trellis. Can you give a few pointers on how you trained them? The look beautiful.

It was very simple. I started with attaching twine horizontally about a foot apart then ended up using those bamboo stakes that are about 1/4"-3/8" in diameter, you get about 6 of them at hd or lowes for a couple bucks. As they grew I helped the tentacles ( or whatever they're called lol) attach to the bamboo stakes.
It's very easy and they probably didn't need much of my help.

I always see honey bees (amongst others) going from flower to flower but still not getting pollinated. It doesn't sound like your pollinating them yourself...getting that much fruit.

Thanks! I’m about to repot one of my 2 plants, and I will be trying your method.

Hi Salty

I guess I am the only one not seeing your pics ....
can you repost, I would love to see them.

Also, what are you doing with the cuttings, I have lots of growth on my red and purple passion but want to make sure they will root before pruning

Thanks,

My panama red is a big vine and has many fruit as always in 3 or 4 seasons and my panama gold only has green ones. Flavicarpas do like outcrossing and are moderately self fertile. they do like a warm climate o be fully flavoured.
