Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Winter is coming to central Florida

Time to go back to the old school ways:   :)

According to wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smudge_pot#cite_note-1:

A smudge pot (also known as a choofa or orchard heater) is an oil-burning device used to prevent frost on fruit trees. Usually a smudge pot has a large round base with a chimney coming out of the middle of the base. The smudge pot is placed between trees in an orchard. The burning oil creates heat, smoke, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. It was believed that this oil burning heater would help keep the orchard from cooling too much during the cold snaps.

Thank You very much Bill!  Received at Miami and planted today Monday!  Currently under a breadfruit tree and receiving a small amount of light.  One leaf still alive as you can see next to my finger in the picture.

Luc, sorry to hear about your Son.  Welcome back!  Still growing your "Luc's Garcinia".  :)

How many did you add to your cart?
Try 1 or 2, it should work.
If you have several, I don't know the threshold, it wouldn't.

I just tried adding two and the shipping is $59.99.  Does it work for you?

I thought you were going to use rice hull for mango potting mix since rice hull has silicon, a mineral that mango needs.

Seanny, thank you for the info.  Yes, I definitely will use it for mango and other fruit trees' potting mix.  Rice hull also contains Lignin which helps balance the ph of soil and turns into Humic substances when mixed with soil.  I do not plan on removing perlite from my soil mix, I will use both because they both offer different benefits.

I’m curious what your looking to use this medium for?
Thank you for your message!  For soil mix and as a cheaper replacement for Perlite.  A study at Purdue University shows that rice hulls may work as well or better than peat and perlite in some finished crops.

I was looking for cottonseed meal and asked Diamond R and they don't carry it and I tried
my local feed store and they ordered me 2 bags?

Thank you.  I still have not found it for sale locally.  I called Diamond-R and two feed stores and no one carries it or is willing to special order it.  Some places didn't even know what rice hulls was.   :-\

I am looking for a place to purchase of 50LB bag of rice hulls in South Florida.  I was wondering if anyone knows where to purchase this.  Thank you before hand.
