I would hit them with Sevin before the leaves are deformed.

use tanglefoot and they can't get up or down.  Remember to do the stake also if you use it.

I have had to do three small mango trees so far this year.   The ants will eat on the very young buds and the leaves come out with nicks in the sides.  The tanglefoot works without having to do anything else.

Don't know if it would work in your situation but when they got into the house I tried this COMBAT Source Kill Max.

It's got fruit in it to attract the ants and they just eat it up. They got into the wall behind our fireplace and were digging out the sand to make a colony. Had to do something quick.

I've used it on infested raised beds as well and it works just great.

Jeff, it seems like they are eating all the new leaves on the very top of the little 3 gal tree... Not sure if that's harmful or not but I don't like it one bit!!!

You can always go lo tech and knock them off with a garden hose as many times a day as possible. IIRC diatomaceous earth is something they do not want to step in....put some at the base of trunk

On small trees.

I take masking tape and place it around the trunk, if any stake you have to tape it also.   Tanglefoot on the tape and shake the tree.   They fall off, can't get back up to the leaves.  Easy and works.
