If you can find some garden- phos mix up 2 tablespoons to a gallon of water and use as a soil drench , you'll have to do this several times . I would do it now and in a couple months do another treatment , and continue this until you see new shoots emerging. Avocados are one of the most sensitive plants that need good air exchange around the roots to be healthy. Also mulch it heavily. The feeder roots like to grow up into the mulch and feed on it . Leaves , wood chips are really good to use for mulch. If the tree does not make it and you want to try again I suggest planting on a mound using lots of sand mixed in to create a good draining soil.

Yes you can grow them in a container for awhile. In my opinion the most important factor is to use the proper potting soil, excellent drainage is essential. The best straight from the bag potting soil that I have used is Gary's Top Pot. It is a mineral based mix ( no compost or wood fillers) and has excellent drainage and you can water every day if you want without suffocating the roots.

    Good morning Adam

I have had success getting rid of rats by using bubblicious bubble gum. They can't digest it and they end up dying. I learned this from watching a youtube video from laguna hills nursery. I hade a couple rats get into my garage so I put some pieces out in the areas that I seen them and within a few days I didn't see them anymore.

There is a grafting tool made by fieldcraft . It can be bench mounted too. It's pricey at about $450.00  The web site is GVbud.com

I would suggest foliar feeding with a chelated iron.

Your best best would be to call atkins nursery and talk to Victor the owner and explain your situation. He may have the varieties available but their not quite big enough to set out . I have heard that he will do this sometimes. If you talk to the son then good luck . He usually just says we don't have it.

Thanks for the advice. I have some water soluble fertilizer (20-20-20)  that I was thinking about diluting by half and drenching it .

I have a page atemoya that has done the same thing as you described. I stripped the leaves in feb/march and the buds swelled but have never popped open. It green under the bark so I know that it’s not dead but I’m wondering how to stimulate some growth . Should I fertilize it with bioflora ?

Yep I moved to California in 1983 and it really was the golden state back then and there were good paying jobs everywhere . I’ve been watching over the last 36 years how this state has went to shi- , and I don’t see anything getting better anytime soon. The same crony politicians keep getting elected ( I have my theory on how that keeps happening too )  so nothing is going to change. I don’t really want to leave because there are things that I really love about living here but when I see year after year the same problems never getting resolved I have to wonder how people can be so stupid to continue voting for the same useless politicians who never even attempt to solve any problems. Austin is getting a bunch of the loons moving there from California to implementing their kooky ideas so it’s no wonder that it’s getting screwed up. Anyway sorry for venting my frustration.   On another note I talked to the rep from microkote and he said that the paint works very well on wooden tree boxes without a primer and actually extends the life of the wood.

I’m growing them in pots for two reasons first reason is that my yard is out of space and the other reason is that I’m retiring in a few mor years and if California continues going koo koo for coco puffs then I probably going to get out of dodge. My sister lives in Idaho and I love it up there. They still have some common sense in their local government. I would take the trees with me when I move.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have thought about mixing my own Soil mix copying Gary's recipe for the simple fact that I'm 3 hours from his nursery. I would need to find a source for the charcoal but other than that it shouldn't be too hard. I have a cement mixer that I bought just for this purpose. I would be interested in the pumice when I get ready to start mixing. I have around 20 bags that I need to use up first though.

If you are really serious about growing a avocado tree in a pot then I suggest that you look into amaroo boxes sold by urbanboxgardens.com  in Duarte Ca.  The 36 inch box is equivalent to a 125 gallon pot . They hold slightly over 1 yard of soil.

Mark from Texas who posts on this board grows avocado trees in rootbuilder pots and you can make them as large as you want. I’m experimenting with some trees that I picked up from Maddock ranch nursery in the plastic sleeves and planted into the 15 gallon tall pots painted on the inside with micro kote  I’m thinking that by next year they can go into a 24 inch box or larger. I planted them in Gary’s top pot mix and so far they are looking good.

Yes one thing about growing in pots is that you have to stick to a strict feeding program and keep track of when you feed them. If you have a time release type like osmocote plus, it feeds for 6 months so it makes it pretty easy to fertilize this way so all you’d need to do is foliar feed once or twice a month.

Yes there’s a % listing of each ingredient on the back of the bag if I remember correctly. I’m not home at this time but I will post what is on the back of the bag when I get back from vacation.  He does have a acid formula that he says is great for blueberries . I want to find out if it’s good for my miracle fruit it’s ph 5.5’

I use it and it is very good. I just repotted 6 trees from Maddock ranch nursery into 15 gallon tall pots using Gary’s mix and it definitely works like he says. I did dump 1 bag into my mixer and add a scoop shovel of sand and mix before potting them . The peat holds moisture well. I  check the moisture level with a soil probe and have to water every 7-9 days.
