Citrus General Discussion / Unhappy Dwarf Lemon
« on: December 01, 2018, 01:08:18 PM »
This poor little lemon tree has been unhappy since I got him last spring. I have several other lemons that are looking great, but this one has continued to drop leaves so now he is down to just a few leaves at the top. Oddly enough, he is blooming right now. Any ideas for reviving him? He's in a combo of sandy cactus mix and regular organic potting soil, under full spectrum lights.

Citrus General Discussion / Indoor Citrus planter
« on: May 22, 2018, 03:33:24 PM »
I'm in the middle of a project, and thought I would post on here before I get too far. I have pretty limited experience with citrus, so want to run my plan by you "experts"! I live in Montana, so most of the year can't keep tropical plants outdoors. Soooo.... I have a nice planter on wheels that is 5 1/2' long, 20" wide, and 22" deep. This planter is sitting in my living room  :) My mother-in-law asked what in the world I was doing with a monstrous planter in my living room ;D I have two grow lights I am mounting above the planter so they are adjustable. My plan is to line it with a double layer of thick plastic and plant some of my tropical  trees in it. I'd like advice for what to fill it with; I was planning on mixing my own sandy potting soil mix, and putting a couple inches of larger chunks of bark on the bottom for drainage that isn't as heavy as rocks. Anyone have a good recipe for citrus mix that's easy on the budget? I'm also not sure which plants will do better together in the planter and how many it can support for the next couple years (if the trees eventually get too big, I can remove some). My most expensive plant that I want to prioritize is a banana tree that is about 24" tall; it is probably a dwarf variety, but I don't know what kind. I have a dwarf lemon, dwarf lime, dwarf orange, dwarf pomegranate and dwarf tangerine that are all less than a foot tall at this point. I also have a full size Meyer lemon that is only 6" tall so far. So, suggestions on which trees to put in the planter? Like I said, if they eventually get too big, I can remove some of them, but keeping in mind that the trees are still small and would otherwise be in small pots with less light, how many can I fit in for the next two to three years? Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trouble Growing Lemons Indoors
« on: February 22, 2018, 06:59:10 PM »
I bought a Meyer Lemon almost two years ago and still have not figured out how to make the poor tree happy. It will start to leaf out and several times has even had flowers, then the leaves all fall off. I've tried everything from different pots to different soil to different watering schedules. Last spring I repotted it into a cactus mix and it started growing like crazy in my warm south facing window. It looked happy for about three months till I moved and it lost all its leaves again. It is now in a west facing window near a heater, but my house is still cold. I've been spritzing it with a spray bottle since my house is dry. I think I've finally killed it after it hung on for two years. The last leaf has fallen off. About half of the trunk is green and half is brown, but I am still determined to master citrus! Any tips to revive this guy are welcome, I've also ordered a new lemon tree (not Meyer). I will keep trying till I figure it out, but I would really appreciate some help! This tree really has me scratching my head! Experienced gardener, but I've never done well with indoor plants :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf Banana Dying
« on: February 22, 2018, 06:33:19 PM »
I've gardened for years, but am really struggling trying to grow tropical fruit indoors, so I will be posting a lot of questions! I am in zone 4/5. Last year I bought I dwarf banana that was about five inches tall. I put it in a big south facing window. My house was very humid and it thrived for the first few months. I repotted several times with a combo of sandy cactus mix and organic potting soil, fertilized regularly with an organic all-purpose fertilizer, and watched it grow. Late summer I moved to a house that is drier, cooler and does not have a south facing window. I placed it in a west facing window instead. By the end of summer it stopped growing completely and the existing leaves continued to shrivel up and turn brown. Now the poor plant just has a little bit of green at the top of the stalk, the rest of the plant is dried up. I've been spraying him with a squirt bottle and placed a heater near him. Any ideas to rescue my banana?
