« on: June 12, 2018, 07:48:00 AM »
Are there any books or videos to guide a novice with regards to effective practices to successfully grow fruit plants/trees - it should cover all aspect of growing - eg soil, nutrients, diseases etc.  Thank you.

I have seeds of baobab - Adansonia digitata.

I am looking for seeds of:
Biriba - Rollinia deliciosa
Jaboticaba - hybrid précoce type
Cassabanana - Sicana odorifera (Red, black or brown)
Any fruit from the Annonaceae family that grow true to type (other than soursop and custard apple) suitable for ultra-tropical climate.

My mulberry bush has been flowering profusely of late.  Many in my neighborhood are requesting for some cuttings to grow themselves.  When is the appropriate time to take cuttings?  Right after harvesting?

Is this the common custard apple or soursop?  Or is it java plum (Syzygium cumini)?  Thank you.

I just received some seeds of saba senegalensis.  Is there any specific procedure to germinate them or simple sow in the pot?  Thank you.

Recently I bought a few yellow dragon fruits from the store.  The sticker label on the fruit had the company name as "Organpit" - Palora-Morona Santiago - Ecuador.  So, I visited their website and a quick search showed this fruit mentioned as Hylocereus triangularis.
http://www.organpit.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7&Itemid=8

I thought these were referred by Latin name either Selenicereus megalanthus or Hylocereus megalanthus.

So, which is correct?  I didn't take photos of the fruit, but this is how it looked.

These pictures are from the company website for reference.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soursop - first fruit size?
« on: June 03, 2018, 04:29:11 AM »
In November 2014, I had planted some seeds of a soursop fruit purchased in Sri Lanka.  The fruit was quite huge.  About a foot and a half on the long side.  After about 3 years, a few of these plants flowered.  Two of them produced a single fruit.  But, the fruits grew only to about the size of a tennis ball.  Annona muricata are supposed to breed true to type?  So, why did my two plants bear only small fruits?

Is it because they were the first fruit of each tree?  The trees are now flowering profusely.  Someone suggested that manual hand pollination might be the solution.  Please help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf jackfruit?
« on: June 01, 2018, 03:21:38 PM »
https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B07DB3WYX2/

The seller has listed this jackfruit as a dwarf variety.  I asked them 2 questions.  Whether these are seed grown or grafted and up to what height they would grow if not pruned.  They replied back -

Quote
All of these are grafted or air layered. Plant size depends on the container. If you plant in soil, it may grow upto 10ft. :)

Since the normal variety of this fruit grows anywhere from 25 to 80 feet, according to their "claim", it should definitely be a dwarf.  But, I'm sceptical.  Is there really a dwarf variety of Artocarpus Heterophyllus?

Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Syzygium bud to flower time
« on: May 26, 2018, 03:43:24 PM »
How long does it take for buds of Syzygium species to bloom?  My tree has produced quite a few buds about a month ago.  None of them have flowered yet.  :'(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Syzygium ID please?
« on: May 25, 2018, 04:50:36 AM »
This plant has recently started producing fruits.  Unfortunately, I never saw the flowering stage.  I bought it from a nursery where the salesperson simply said rose apple.  Judging by the shape of the fruit being formed, as it is not round, I think I can safely assume it's not Syzygium jambos.  It most likely looks like Syzygium aqueum.  Please help.  Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pereskia bleo flowering.
« on: May 24, 2018, 01:05:17 PM »
I have about 6 pereskia bleo plants started from cutting.  Now 4 of them are almost 5 - 6 feet tall.  For the past one month, almost all of these plants have produced flowers which bloom for a day and then they drop off.  What is causing them to drop off?  Is it due to any deficiency?  Another thing.  Right now, we are in the middle of peak summer.  Average high temperature is almost 100 F now.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that these flowers are being pollinated by stingless bees.  You can see one sitting on the flower.

I very eagerly look forward to taste the fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Köppen climate classification
« on: May 24, 2018, 08:13:20 AM »
Chennai is classified as AW in the Köppen climate classification list.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification

Can I safely say that what fruits grows in other AW regions can be grown here?  Or will soil conditions etc play a major role too?  Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya
« on: April 07, 2017, 12:31:23 AM »
I have a couple of papaya trees which have started bearing fruits.  These are dwarf variety.  I don't have any further information about them.  One particular tree is consistently bearing sweeter fruits but they are smaller than the other of the same variety.  My question is that if I plant seeds from this particular tree, would the resulting fruits be small or are there chances of them growing like other normal fruits?  Thank you.

I'm trying to grow kiwano.  I have planted them in 2 different locations.  1 place I had added fertilizer in the beginning.  The other place got nothing at all.  So far, there has been only vegetative growth in both the plants.  It's been more than 6 months now.  No signs of any flower.  What am I doing wrong?  :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soursop - Single or split trunk?
« on: April 20, 2016, 08:02:11 AM »
I have a few saplings of soursop.  Out of these some have a single trunk like the one in the left and others have split trunks (right).  Should I be bothered?  Is one better than the other?  If yes, which one?  Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Roadkill (Warning - Graphic image) ;‑)
« on: April 16, 2016, 09:33:30 AM »
The poor mango probably had just dropped off from the tree when it was hit by an unidentified fast moving vehicle.  Death was instantaneous.  Police have released this image of the victim and are asking for the public’s help in identifying and finding the vehicle and its driver. Anyone with information is asked to call the Chennai Police Department.

There's this plant growing at our house.  None of the local support group seem to be able to ID this plant.  Can anyone help with identifying this plant?  Thank you.

I'll be receiving seed of flying saucer fruit soon.  Since there is not much information on the web, I'll be grateful if someone could explain how to germinate these seeds.  Thank you.

46
I have seeds from these two pods/fruits to give away.   They have been placed on an A4 paper for size comparison.

I don't seek anything in return,  but I'd appreciate if you can mention if you have any seeds to share.

PS:  I'll be able to post only after 29th.

I'm thinking of growing cassabanana by allowing it to climb on the side wall of my building.  Since it climbs by means of 4-parted tendrils equipped with adhesive discs that can adhere tightly to the smoothest surface:

Could someone guide me whether this is safe or will the vine damage the painting on the wall?  Something like this:

I don't have any place to install a trellis big enough to support this vine and also I don't want to smoother a tree.

Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this cucumis metuliferus?
« on: March 12, 2016, 07:57:17 AM »

The images of cucumis metuliferus I see online don't look anything like mine in the picture above.   Just want to confirm it is kiwano plant.   Thank you.

PS: Yes, it's already affected by leaf miners.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / For trade: Pithecellobium dulce
« on: March 12, 2016, 05:05:44 AM »
This plant has been listed as a potential weed and an invasive specie in Hawaii and parts of Australia.   But, here in South India,  that doesn't seem to be the case.   Please research before deciding whether to grow or not in your area.   Thank you.
