I have decided to wait to start my rooting test using the potato method shown the above video.  The three citrus varieties that I wanted to use in the test are presently budding out.  Rooting is ALL ABOUT ENERGY.  When attempting to get roots to develop on a piece of live wood, one needs to insure that the wood's endogenous inherent energy level is at its highest.  This is not the case when a branch has already begin to flush or flower, as it has expended much of its energy to produce the new growth.  The best time for success is when the wood has re-built its  maximum energy level, and that time is the period just before the start of any new growth.  I will do my potato test at that time.

First flex the small and medium  branches to determine if they are still flexible, and have not become brittle and  dried out. Using your finger nail or a sharp knife, scrape off a small piece of bark in several locations of the tree to see if the cambium layer is still green in color.  If both are OK your tree could leave out next spring.  If the tree's branches are dried brittle, and you can not locate any green cambium then it certainly does not look good for the tree.  In any case there is no hurry to remove the tree.  Wait until spring for any possible growth to determine what course of action you wish to take.

BajaJohn your grapefruit could be one of  many, however looking at it, it looks like a variety called  Marsh.   Zafra, a long time ago Dr. Malcolm Manners who is the chair of the citrus department at Florida Southern University, told me no grapefruit should be picked before March (for trees growing in the northern hemisphere).   When left hanging on the tree until then grapefruits sweeten up and the acid content reduces.

Lets NOT get involved in a long discussion about the Monsanto Company.  Lets keep to the grass.

Choose whatever method you wish, there are many ways to kill grass.  Personally I would use Round UP, but each to their own. One caution, citrus roots grow VERY close to the surface of the soil,  digging out the grass is not an option.

Garcinia, sorry that was the only seed I have found so far.  However, as I eat the fruit from my tree if I find another I'll send you a private message.

I have used Round-Up (glyphosate) around and under trees, along fence lines etc. without any problems.   The cautions, what Tom wrote about in the above post should be followed, such as spraying on windy days.   It works very well killing grass.

Betray, yes the orange  (Washington Navel) colored fruit is sweeter.  Taste like a good Washington Navel.

I don''t want to replace the one branch that is producing the normal fruit of orange color pulp as a Washington Navel Orange.  I think it is neat that this happened, and I want to keep that branch attached to the mother Cara Cara  tree.  O f course a person could take all the buds from that branch and possibly grow Washington Navels, but why do that.  A mature Washington Navel orange tree can be purchased from a dozed suppliers ready to produce fruit.

Ilya, I agree with you that it would have been helpful if they showed the cutting all the way to the end, but they did not.  That is one of the reasons I'm going to do the experiment myself.  The other reason is that it is known that roses root very well using the potato method. I plan to stick the cutting tomorrow (Saturday 2-11-2017).  It could take some time for all of the cutting to root, but when ever it does or does not occur I'll post here.

Citrus General Discussion / Did A Branch Revert Back?
« on: February 10, 2017, 02:58:28 PM »
My Cara Cara produced a large crop of fruit this year.  All the fruit on one of the tree's branches is producing fruit with no Cara Cara pigmentation, but back to the orange pulp of the Washington Navel.  Remember that the Cara Cara mutation was first discovered on a branch of a Washington Navel tree growing in Venezuela .  The branch on my tree must have reverted back.

I've only grown one variety of pummelo and that was Chandler pink pummelo. Chandler was a great tasting pummelo.  I don't know much about other pummelo varieties.

Florida is looking to have one of the worst citrus crops in a long time due to the worsening effects of citrus greening. Crop disease continues to threaten what used to be a signature industry in the sunshine state. The state’s orange crop is poised to shrink to what could be the smallest harvest in five decades.  If I lived in Florida, and planted a new citrus tree, I would put a protective screen around the tree to keep out the psylllid that transmits the greening disease.

Sonny, congratulations on your success.  Xie Shan satsuma is in my opinion the best of all the satsumas.

I  am going to try a Dekopon cutting, Valentine pummelo and a Saint Teresa lemon.  In addition to the video after I place the potato in a 1-gallon container I plan to cover the container with a plastic bag.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Moro blood orange, wow!
« on: February 09, 2017, 01:24:48 PM »
Moro Blood oranges are dark purple/red due to the chemical anthocyanin.  It takes cool temperatures to activate the anthocyanin to make the color.  Areas like Florida do not get enough cool temperatures to achieve good color..   A Moro grown warm (like in a greenhouse) produces orange color flesh.

Like I wrote, I'm going to try it and will post what happens

Laaz the coloration of your Cara Cara is really something.   My Cara Cara tree which is 11 ft. high and wide and is something over 10 years old produces a lot of fruit, but the color is not as deep as your picture above.   Nice looking fruit.  With the next Citrus Expo in your area, you should put that tree's fruit in the contest.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Thanks To US Customs Office
« on: February 08, 2017, 10:55:28 AM »
here is another thanks to the customs inspection officials at the US boarder:
Us Customs and Border Protection officers in Pharr, Texas found 3,947 pounds of marijuana which was hidden inside hollowed out limes on January 30. The drugs were found in a produce truck crossing the Texas Mexico border near the Gulf of Mexico and was found thanks to an imagining inspection system and a K-9 team.

Evidently, the K-9 dogs know the difference between marijuana and limes.
