No, I would not let a tree that size hold fruit.  I personally think it is important to let them grow a couple years in the ground so you don't stress the tree.

This may be an inherent defect of CC that stems from rootstock incompatibility?  What did the graft union look like?  Was the rootstock much larger than the trunk?  Thanks for sharing.

My CC that snapped in hurricane Mathew had rootstock compatability issues.  It was almost 2 liter sized thickness trunk and snapped at the ground level.  It was the only mango that I lost out of 20 varieties.

Where did you get it?

The Dwarf Red Lady that I have is sweet considering I don't get the heat that you guys do, and there is no musky taste.

Hey Mark,

I am really thinking about a Red Lady papaya. However I am finding some conflicting information. Some places say it is damaged at freezing like other papayas, and some say it is ultra-tropical, damaged at 50 F.

What is your experience? Do you protect it in your zone 10b winters, do you observe damage?

I will be protecting whatever papaya I grow, and with frost cloth + heating I can take a 26 F night outside to about 34-38 F under a frost cloth. But I don't think I could get up to 50 F.

I'm in a different climate than you but I've not noticed red lady to be any different than other papayas in cold tolerance.  The several plants that I had were definitely not ultra tropical.  It was also the best tasting variety that I've had so far.

I'll trade you physical graffiti and purple haze for some avocado bud wood.

No way getting around the fact that it is a lot of work!  We never did 50 lbs. at a time, but what worked for us is slicing the mangos above and below the seeds, scooping out the flesh, freezing it on a tray, and then putting the frozen pieces in zip-lock bags.  Simple and fairly quick.  Very compact freezer storage.
1.)a vacuum sealer works very well for this and the packages take up little room
2.) dried mango is great too- invest in another dehydrator?
3.) Give some to the neighbors - they really appreciate it
4.) A church food bank would also be happy to take some
5.) Mango preserves and mango butters are wonderful - canning isn't too hard and sweet canned items last for 2 years or more, and they make great holiday gifts

Congrats on all of the mangos!

Do you have a good recipe for mango butter?

HAHAHA As much as I like excalibur, I think you pretty much have a 75% chance of the label matching any given tree, It's kind of a pot luck.

My excalibur gold is not long either.

Any other guesses as what cultivar this is?  Here's a couple pictures before it was cut.  It's definitely grafted.

Yeah I was really excited to try the Excalibur Red.   The fruit is pretty good it could be a bit more crunchy for my taste but that could have been my fault leaving it on the tree to long.

Here's my Excalibur red jackfruit.  It's fruiting for the first time and has already set five fruit, I'm going to limit it at three or four fruit this year.

Unless the color changes as the tree matures I guess I got a mislabeled Excalibur Red. Does anyone have any idea what cultivar this is?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rollinia fruit problem
« on: July 05, 2016, 08:36:32 PM »
I don't believe pollination could have been an issue.  The bases of unpollinated flowers abort in about a week, when about 1/8th of an inch diameter.
They do not get to be two inches in diameter!

So I suspect your tree has a mineral deficiency (Boron?  Zinc?) or an infection.

Great thank you Har.  I was hoping you would chime in.  Could it be a fungus?  Would copper or sulfur be better and at what rate?  I'll give it some key plex and see if that helps.

Did the tree grow out of it or does it still abort the fruit?
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rollinia fruit problem
« on: June 30, 2016, 09:53:03 PM »
My rollinia tree is around five years in the ground and should be large enough to hold fruit but it hasn't held one to maturity yet.  It sets what seems like hundreds but when they get to marble size the stem gets black then the fruit does and they fall off.  A friend thinks it's anthracnose and I plan on spraying some copper to see if it helps.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

First of all this looks like a papaya fruit fly to me but I'm definitely not an expert on bug identification, please correct me if I'm mistaken on the ID.  Is this common that the papaya ff target canistel?  Any control methods besides bagging?

Thanks

If I recall correctly it's been in the ground around two and a half to three years.

Ed you can probably sell it to a landscape company.  They will come and remove it and give you money to buy more mango trees after they do all the work removing it.
