Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guavas in Nor Cal?
« on: September 06, 2018, 05:00:36 PM »
Can you grow Guavas in northern California 9B?
Preferably red varieties for juice.

Are there any varieties that would be recommended for juicing? And are there any dwarfed varieties?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shading young plants
« on: August 29, 2018, 08:35:13 PM »
I have some young seedlings (Mainly Eugenias, sapodillas, Mangos) That I am transferring outside as it's no longer 110 degrees outside. Currently they are under a raised bed I made for strawberries but I will have more seedlings and I'm about out of room.

Is there a good shade cloth I should look in to? Could anyone provide pictures of their setup? I don't even know what % I should be looking at.
My back yard is facing east so it gets morning sun, but is usually pretty shaded by 5pm.

Any help is appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Which Avocado next:
« on: August 26, 2018, 03:38:34 PM »
Which avocado should I get next? I have room for two trees. They will stay in pot until next season as I am going to start prepping the corner of my yard with wood chips.
I need a tree that can stay fairly small, and is fairly cold tolerant. I'm in 9b.
I currently have a hass. My local home depot has Bacon, holiday, lamb hass, mexicola, stewart. This is the largest selection I've seen in my area, should I try and order a grafted plant from a forum member or go forward with one of these?

When is the best season to plant them? Should I plant after night time temps are 40ish after last frost in the spring to give them time to mature before next winter?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My plants (New to tropicals)
« on: August 18, 2018, 05:50:25 PM »
Just wanted to post a few pictures of my newest addiction. Mostly fueled by Mike's low price seeds! (Thanks Mike)
Had a bit of a learning curve with some seeds so far, and not all are doing well, but it's a work in progress.

Zills black suriname in the middle, rest are sapodillas. (Silas, Makok, hasya)

My only avocado tree that bounced back after over watering (Hass)

4-in-1 cherry. struggling a bit. Lost all green foliage on a graft recently.

Dead-ish avocados. some suckers from root ball. Will see how these do before tearing them out. (Lamb-Hass and holiday)

Y. Grumichama, pitomba, pitangatuba and peanut butter fruit (and my last sapodilla still emerging)

Same as last but also some muntingia calabura. I had alot of tip burn and  started using water that's been sitting out for a while instead of straight from the tap, appears to be helping.

Manilla Mango

And pruning advice on this? I lopped about 1 ft off when I got it and it's growing weird now. [Same Manilla]

Baby mangos from seed. Manilla, Nam Dac Mai, tommy atkins? (From the grocery store)

Goji Berry. Not sure I like these too much. Reminds me too much of a tomato.

Passion fruit (Red) Finally taking off and growing. Should be flowering soon but not expecting fruit (first year)

Constructive criticism welcome. Like I said, I'm new to this so will take any advice.
I lost alot of seeds (Including all my cherries of the rio:( ) but I now have them on a heat mat and in upside down plastic totes. Humidity is now kept around 70% and I'm noticing much better growth on some seedlings, though my camera doesn't show alot of it!

We got heavy wind yesterday and I lost 3/4th of my plots :(
Is there something I can do to prevent that or is this just a random occurance? I also lost some branches on my persimmon and plot trees. Very abnormal wind yesterday :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango root stalk for grafting
« on: May 11, 2018, 12:35:22 AM »
Hey everyone. Just picked up some manilla mangos from the Asian market and I plan on growing a bunch as they are the wife's favourite. I wanted to experiment with grafting (never done it before ) would manilla be an OK root stalk to try or should I get some seeds/seedlings from the forum? I want to try some other variations, I have a small yard so a dwarfing rootstock would be fantastic if possible. I hope to grow 3 or 4 seedlings for the yard as I hear they do better from seed, though take longer to bear fruit. If at all.

Any input appreciated. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado/Mango pruning
« on: May 10, 2018, 11:24:06 AM »
Hello,
I have three small avocados (3-4 ft,) and one mango (3ft)
I've read somewhere that in order to promote branch growth on the mango you should cut off about 1/3 of the top.
Should something like this be done for the avocados as well? (Lamb Hass, Hass, Holiday) If you have any instructional videos, or sources that would be fantastic!

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help: Mango
« on: May 09, 2018, 12:16:25 PM »
I have a very small mango seedling (Manilla) that has some orange spots on the leafs. Is this red rust or sunburn? I believe it was shaded prior to me getting the tree and I put it in full sun for a while.
It is now starting to have new leaves but growth is slow. I have it in partial shade currently during hottest part of the day.

Do I need to remove the afflicted leaves?

Thanks,

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Bird tape?
« on: May 08, 2018, 12:35:29 PM »
Quick question:
Does bird tape work? How much should I use? My cherries are starting to redden, pluots will be next and my persimmons will be growing soon and I need to keep the birds off my fruits.

Please share your thoughts.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Identify: Banana
« on: April 26, 2018, 11:54:22 AM »
Hello all,
I have a bunch of bananas in my yard (I already cut out about 2/3 of them)
Could you please help me identify the variety?
They flower but don't produce fruit. It could be the temperature, or because they're so dense.
Any help is appreciated!

I have an ornamental plum that's been around since the 90's... set fruit for the first time. I hear they're very poor tasting, but has anyone tried them? Mine are still rock hard and cherry sized.

Do these trees grow well in 9b? A nursery in Anaheim has some small ones for 25. May try them. No visible graft though...would I be waiting too long?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting Advice: Short - partial shade
« on: April 12, 2018, 03:20:38 PM »
Hey guys,
Looking for some suggestions on what kind of fruit bushes would grow well in partial shade and not grow overly large.
I want to plant some stuff around my fruit trees in the future and would like to look in to a few things in the mean time.
Are Miracle berry's worth the time?

Thanks,

Good morning All!
Yesterday the wife and I were at the local nursery picking up our holiday avocado tree (yay) and saw that they have purple passion fruit and multi grafted cherries.
Our cherry tree (Bing) is on it's way out. It was planted in 94 by the previous homeowner and it's had alot of rot and dead limbs. This year I cut a very large section out and it's growing some nice cherries now but we want to start a cherry tree in a large pot now as we know this tree is past it's prime.
I have a few questions regarding Cherry tree and passion fruits.

Is there any downside to multi grafted trees? I believe they were Bing, Lapins, Van cherries. some had black tartarian. Are they safe to grow in pot for another year or two?
Do passion fruits grow well north of Sacramento? I believe I'm zone 9B (we have a few days that dip below 28 degrees or so. Would I need to grow this in a pot or would it be safe to plant in the ground now? I know the cold will kill back the vines and that they are VIGOROUS growers, does dying back completely to roots affect the harvest?

Any input will be appreciated. Trying to expand our garden currently. We've got Meyer lemons, Pluots, Pomellos, Bing Cherry, Limes, two persimmon variations, blue berries, Naval oranges, raspberries and our newest pomegranate and holiday avocado (Coming soon: GEM avocado!!)

Thanks and enjoy your weekend!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / SoCal - GEM AVOCADO + Recommendations
« on: April 04, 2018, 01:57:07 PM »
Hello!
I live in NorCal (North of sacramento) but I will be visiting SoCal to make use of our disneyland passes...
I'm trying to locate a GEM avocado tree in the LA area (within an hour or so) as I can not locate them up north.
Does anyone know where to locate one currently?

I'm trying to decide between Holiday, and 'LittleCado' for my second tree as well, any input?
I hear with our night time temps we don't have to stress the 'A' or 'B' type flower to much as the plants will be creating both flowers during the same time.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!
