Room For One Small Mango Tree: Recommendations?
« on: January 24, 2012, 03:14:14 PM »
I'm in central Broward County.  I presently have one Cogshall.  It's been in ground for about 3.5 years and is now finally beginning to push out some inflos.  From a 3 gallon pot I now have an 8 foot "behemoth".   :P
Of course, now that I see my brown thumb can actually grow things, I want to add a second tree to my yard.  It, too, will be in ground and due to limited space needs to be have a growth habit similar to the Cogshall.  I'm thinking about 12 feet max will be a good fit.
Additionally, the new tree need be disease resistant, be somewhat of a heavy producer since I am limited to two trees, and produce fruit that is fiberless.  My research is leading me to a Pickering or an Angie.
Opinions, two cents, and beratings are all welcome.  Thank you.

Pickering or Angie would both due and you'd be very happy with either of them.  Of course, my personal favorite should also receive consideration.  That would be Maha Chanok.

Harry, how big does the Maha Chanok grow?  Can it be managed with pruning?

Its very manageable.  My largest tree, which has been in the ground for about 17 years, is about 10 feet tall.  And,  it can be kept smaller than that with additional pruning.

Interesting.  I was under the impression they are large trees.  10 to 12 feet would be ideal.  Can you recommend a source to purchase a 3 gallon tree?

I think the only source right now may be Excalibur in Lake Worth.

I loooove Pickering, nice shape, lots of fruits, delicious taste. I have not tasted MC but based on reviews I will be buying one soon!
Good luck!

That's pretty neat looking, Adam.  What's with that dork wearing an orange shirting getting in the way of a beautiful mango picture? j/k   ;)    are those trees in the same potting mix you'd mentioned in the other thread?
