growing Mr. Minh's atemoya in FL
« on: May 19, 2014, 11:54:15 PM »
I don't know if we already have a thread dedicated to this new atemoya cultivar....but I'd like to start one.

not sure how the story goes, but I remember hearing that Mr. Minh is a CA grower who spent many years trying to develop a nice hybrid annona...the result was a prolific producer of delicious large fruits.

anyone have more info about the origins (parentage) of this hybrid?

I'm also curious to hear of other growers experiences in FL with this variety.  I'm hoping it's not like African Pride...where it performs poorly in our humid FL weather....I know some Atemoya varieties are best suited for the CA climate.

so far in my experience, it looks like the Mr. Minh's atemoya is extremely vigorous, and easy to grow....the tree flowered profusely shortly after being grafted, but did not set any fruits the first year....now on the second growing season since grafting, the tree really seems to be setting some fruits....(i've been hand pollinating as well).

I am excited to see how this variety performs in my state..I'm hoping it does half as good as the pics i've seen of the plants in CA!

JF, would have the most knowledge about it on these forums. I saw Mr. Minh at the Cherimoya tasting last year. Can't recall if there was ever any of Mr. Minh atemoya to taste however. I have always heard it was a great chewy atemoya variety.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

You bought a fruit or a tree?

I got scion from scion exchange last Jan.
The graft had 1 flower, but dropped before it was mature.
I'll strip leaves in a week to force more flowers.

I hope you didn't buy it from Mr. Minh. His prices are pretty high and based on the age of the tree, not the size. He wanted more for the stunted older plants than the vigorous younger ones.
