I heard that Lemon Zest is a shy producer
« on: April 25, 2015, 03:32:01 PM »
The rumor mill must have been right. I only count about 100 on my 4 year old tree. Darnit, I should have listened to the generalizations / anecdotes about Dr Campbell's trees being unthrifty. Who's this crazy Gary Zill anyhow?? Ugg why didn't I listen to the pros!

My golden queens are sizing up nicely. I think these babies are going to be over 5 pounds when they ripen. Flesh on the drops has a deep golden yellow (hence the name?).

Hard to see, but the Dot is also a shy producer. Darn, I should have listened to the xperts at blind island nursery. This tree sucks.

Finally got around to snapping a shot of my larger vexator.

That's more than a 100 ways to prove them wrong.. :D

It sure does go after its parent, PPK . My Lemon Meringue was a shy producer the first three years but is holding about 100 fruits right now. If not for the crazy winds a few weeks ago, it would be holding more than 150 now.

Ha !  Yeah, my lemon zest is also heavy with a crop at 4 years old.  Branches weighed down to the ground :)

lol My 4 year old lemon zest is FULL of mangoes. In fact, I lost a portion of the crop since one of the branches snapped and still have a TON of lemon zest mangoes. ;)

Very cool!  A little spray goes a long way.

My 3 year old Dot is holding 20+ fruit on the first crop and about another 20 for the second crop. The future looks awesome!

If anyone wants to donate or sell a few LZ's when they are ready PLEASE let me know or put me on a list.   Planted one on a gamble/advice from Bullie at a friends house, but probably won't get fruit till next year or after. Dying to try one of these to compare to ppk.

Is any one in Hawaii growing LZ?    If so on the windward side?
Can not get any production even from Raposa. Yet all the wild trees along the highway are currently giving a second flowering while holding a nice first crop!!!!
woe is me

Wow Cookie Monster!  Awesome crop you got there!  Are you still watering your tree?  And if so how often?  Maybe that's why my young trees can't hold fruit, because i haven't watered them regularly until recently

haha ya we had to prop up some of the branches, cause they were tending towards a potential break. In my experience the LZ takes 3 - 4 years to really come into bearing, but it's worth the wait :-).

LZ is better than PPK both in size and flavor. LZ's can get fairly big -- 1.5+ pounds a pop.

I don't water. In fact, I haven't even watered the grass in my front yard in several years. I just have some drip irrigation for my potted trees and the jabos. But, that may change shortly, as I'm working on a new irrigation setup.

I also don't fertilize. Just gads of tree trimmer mulch -- about a 6 inch layer once every 12 - 18 months.

The one and only thing I did was spray with OMRI listed copper on a 2 week schedule. Being inland and next to a freshwater canal, fungus is rampant here. The majority of the mango trees along our canal actually DIE slow and prolonged deaths from fungal infection (mostly powdery mildew it appears). Each leaf flush will become infected and drop all leaves before they can harden. After a couple of years like that, the trees will just croak. Pretty nutty.

That mulch is beautiful. I just got a driveway sized load dropped off and my trees are starting to live in donuts.

Beautiful trees and fruit! I love the Lemon Zest mango, my favorite mango so far. My LZ tree planted about about a year ago has grown great and is holding some fruit. I usually remove all fruit from my mango trees for the first three years but I love this mango so much that I'll probably make an exception and let it hold one fruit. Besides, I love the LZ so much that I have two grafted trees and three grafts that have taken on my Manila rootstock. Thanks for sharing.

I have about 75 holding around the tree. I lost half my crop after the cold snap this week a conservative guess is about 5-10 of these will ripen. I am testing LZ on Ataufo and Laverne seedlings so far it's very promising.

Are all of those fruit supposed to be LZ? The fruit and pannicle color do not appear to be correct.

Can you please elloborate on your copper "2 wk schedule". I was wondering the duration of this program and at what time of year?  Trees look good!

Yes. The ones inside the canopy are pale green. I'll take pix in a few weeks and you'll see how they lose that blush.
