Hi folks

just found this and it might be of interest for some of you :

This plant set some fruits last year but they fell down before maturity... never knew if they fell on their own or if the damn birds had something to do with it... so this year I don't want to take any chances and decided to take precautions... now these beauties are like birds in a cage!

As you can see all branches are very thin... I had to make some supports because the branches were already bending with the weight of those small fruits... no idea if they will hold the weight of a mature fruit... this plant is in a 20 liter pot and the biggest branch should have only some 70 cm height.

Keep connected as I intend to report evolution here...

Am I the first European to fruit E. klotzschiana or what???

Thanks for posting this, Miguel.  I was actually meaning to do a posting asking if it was normal for these to keep sending up additional new shoots from below ground level.  I have a few small seedlings that have been doing this but I see from your pics that it looks like this is normal behavior for this species.  Have you found these to be "finicky" like most of the Cerrado plants?  Mine have been doing OK but I have not yet tried to plant them out in our abundant moisture.  Please also be sure to post regarding the taste when the fruits mature!

Congratulations, Miguel! That is very special. I always heard that one was near impossible to grow. Just out of curiosity, do you have birds inside your greenhouse? I always figured that you were protecting the plants you grew outside from birds. But you are growing this one inside your greenhouse, aren't you?

Hi Solko
yes I have a huge problem with the birds inside my GH... specially the bird species "Turdus merula" is a terrible plague for my fruits... I only have my GH closed during winter... as soon as the weather warms up I have to open lateral windows and roof vents to avoid plants getting fried... during first years the birds seem to be scared and avoided entering the GH but now that they realized there are fruits available inside I usually found 3 or 4 of these birds each time I visit my GH... lately they even dare to enter whyle I am there watering or doing something else... these guys should have nests and small baby birds to feed now...

But this weekend I found something cool... I discovered that there is a place on the floor inside the GH (on a corridor) that the birds use preferentially to eat the fruits.. and they let the seeds scattered on the floor... As I hate to waste precious seeds I decided to collect these seeds and save them to share with the clients for my seeds... so if someone buying seeds from me receives a package labelled as "Surprise seeds" those are these specially bird selected seeds... I can't identify it but they always will be for fruits in season... for instance now they can be red grumis, or calycinas, or from the one I call " my best pitanga", or Pitangas var. dasyblasta, or Cherry of Rio Grande... hope my clients appreciate this idea.... this was my first bath of bird selected seeds (collected this week-end)

Hi Miguel!
Congrats again on this one! You should have a very impressive Eugenia collection!
This ones looks pretty nice fruits.
Good luck with the Turdus merula problem; arround here they're also a big (should I say huge!) problem. This year the first crop of pitangas, was like 98% for them. From 3 trees I ate 4 fruits...

Hi again folks,

just found the first fruit fallen in the ground today...
and I need to apologize because I've just realized I was probably wrong about the ID on this one... now I think this is in fact Eugenia arenosa, instead of E. klotzchiana as I called it... Sorry for my mistake!
Anyway here are the photos of the first ripe fruit:

I received these seeds from Helton back in a day when he called these species "Pera do cerrado com pelos" and "Pera do Cerrado sem pelos"... the last one was back then identified by Helton as "Eugenia klotzschiana var. glabrata"... only several years latter Helton corrected the ID to Eugenia arenosa... anyway I should have both species so the one I was calling arenosa until now should be in fact the klotzschiana... let's wait and see... fingers crossed for 2017 fruit season!

Forgot to comment about the taste... in a few words, "very good" to "excellent"... sweet, a little bit acid, one of those fruits you can eat a full bowl at once if you have them available... taste is not immediately comparable to any other myrtaceae fruit I had before, and I already tasted a few ... definitely no strong taste as I've always read it was supposed to find in klotzschiana fruits... and this is another clue indicating this is in fact E arenosa.

I will be planting those seeds for myself as this is one of those species that you should have more than one plant!... no doubt about it!

Olá Luis,

Helton speaks about -4ºC as minimum temperature it can resist, so classifying it as a 9a climate plant... and I think he is probably right... this species is winter deciduous and that should mean something... I have no doubt that mine (both klotszchiana and arenosa) have already dealed with these -4ºC at my place ( but always inside my GH)... someday, when I have more backup plants, I will try these species in the open...

Very good, they look great. Another one to look forward to adding to the list. Always a bonus when they good enough you can stomach more Than one. Has the fruit got a bit of fuzz on it or is it smooth skinned?
