How does Myrica faya taste? Is it easy to germinate and grow? Would it do well in Florida?
Thanks
Onur
Hi Onur! Myrica faya fruits, are small, black, roundish, and about taste they are very sweet, with a reminiscente flavor of blackberry, but they are quite astringent! Pleople use it here to give some colour to distiled beverages, and to breack a bit the strong taste of alchoool. If you have a big ammount you can also ferment it and make some alchoolic drinks.
As it is very drought resistant and can thrive in almost any kind of soil, it can be a good rootstock, for other Myrica species that are more complicated to grow...
In order to germinate these seeds, a scarification process, should be beneficial, as in nature these seeds are dispersed by birds, so something should happen in it's digestive system, that should be replicated if you want good results, otherwise it could take ages to sprout, as the seed coat is quite hard...
I'm not sure if this species is allowed in Florida.
Hope this helps.
