A visit from Hailey's Comet - Dragonfruit that is
« on: July 18, 2012, 08:58:57 AM »
Here is today's haul, mostly smalls.  Looks like the average size this year will be down to a pound.  The first four I picked on Monday were 1+ pounders but the large from the first bloom mostly need a few more days of brewing.

Amazing color! The PIN dragonfruit viewer seems to portray Halley's Comet as the largest of the non-whites. What other varieties do you have? I have only Natural Mystic. Or at least, that's how the PIN tag identified it.

I bought physical graffiti, david bowie, and purple haze cuttings in the middle of last year.  I have themin 3 gal pots.  The david bowie and purple haze each have a single fruit, about 3/4 of a pound. Around the same time, I bought Natural Mystic in a 3 gal pot and it has 2 fruit, one looks like it will be over a pound. I also have a zamorano in a 1 gal and vietnamese white in a 25 gal.  Purple haze has put out a few flowers that aborted before opening so I am excited about that one when it puts on some size.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the different varieties when you have a chance to try them. I would be interested to hear how the flavor of David Bowie compares to your pink-fleshed fruits. PIN says Purple Haze can get to two pounds - wow.

Just looked back at your previous post about your Halley's Comet. Too bad it's not self-fruitful as stated!

Do you let the moths pollinate or is it that you don't have enough blooms in a night to cross pollinate yourself?

I have 6 posts with Zamorano growing up them. They are new plants, so new fruit yet. Can anyone compare the taste of a Zamorano to the others? I am wondering if I should diversify.

BTW, I'm willing to give cuttings away to anyone in South Florida willing to come get them.  Zamorano is a fast grower.

They are pretty good.  My wife and older girl love them too.  I got my younger daughter to eat it for the first time (by saying that Sleepdoc's daughter loves them) and she gobbled down her fair share.  Generally, the only fruits she eats are strawberries and watermelon. It is a nice change up from mangos.

I have Physical Graffiti, American Beauty and Haley's Comet cuttings off of mine that are rooting in the base of the planter if you need any.
