First taste of new Zills Sunrise Mango
« on: July 20, 2012, 07:56:53 AM »
What a dissapointment this mango was, Funky odor and just an ok taste, just couldnt get past the odor of the fruit itself, while the taste was just ok, for whatever reason the odor of the fruit just killed it for me,not going to be recommending this to my customers. It is a nice looking fruit but that"s all it has going for it.

Thanks for the info.  Unfortunately I planted one of these in the keys without tasting it.  I guess it's top work time :) ..

I would not be too quick to react...everyone's tastes are different and the fruit could also come out different in the much different growing conditions of the Keys.

True.  Maybe I'll add one variety on it though ... Make it a 2 in 1 ..

Do you think it was over-ripe?

Unpleasant odors from mangoes are usually a sign of over ripeness or some issue with chemicals applied during growing. I wouldn't draw any final conclusions as of yet until you get another season's tasting done.

I got the fruit from Zills on wed. when I was picking up a tree order alon with a couple of juliette mangoes to try,the fruit was not over ripe in fact if anything it was a touch under ripe,I agree we all have different tastes and I am no mango connesuir but my daughter and a customer all had the same reaction, maybe someone else who has tried the fruit can also give an opinion.

Interesting. I had a slice from one last year and thought it was delicious. It's an 'improved' jakarta.

man maybe I just got a bad fruit, now I am confused, they only had 1 fruit and I got it,guess I have to try it again,it was definitly a strange odor.I planted a tree in the ground,I was gonna get rid of it and put something else, guess I will hold off. I sure wish i had a couple of more fruit to test.

The fruit itself looked very good and definitely as far as looks go an easy sell, Dont want to rush to judgement on one fruit taste, but man I just cant get over the smell. I will do what is really hard for me,and be patient!!

I haven't had it in a few years but I remember it being a good mango. I can't remember any funny odors. As Harry said, it was probably over ripe.

I am sure it was not over ripe, the fruit was 3/4 yellow with hints of green and firm to the touch not soft in any way. It is a little mind boggling for sure,it was just such a weird odor, cant put my finger on it.
