pine sawdust in the soil: good or not?
« on: June 10, 2018, 10:41:45 AM »
Do you think pine sawdust in pots for jaboticabas and other myrtáceas or even garcinias, will it be good?

It is from loggers in the area where they cut assembled pine woods, maybe glued with some vinyl glue, which should be remnants of vinyl glue in the substrate ... but I found out that a nursery that sells me jaboticabas includes sawdust (I do not know from what wood) to lighten the substrate and the plants look great! they keep moist and drains well.

I need it because is free and I can get a lot of it! that way my pots will be lighter and cheaper... but, would the plants suffer?

I think it is not good, I vaguely remember reading an article about that,  the saw dust,  actually takes up nitrogen,   also it retains water and can cause rot.

If you compost it with other organic matter it should be ok.  hopefully someone else can confirm this.

Jabo should do (and does) fine in a a woody medium.
yes, it has to be composted, or it will rob nitrogen from the soil.
ive seen some people just add more Nitrogen
(personally, i think this is  a terrible idea)

i add as little chemicals as possible, so i try to get my soil just right.
Jabo is woody and therefore likes a fungally dominant soil

i get huge bags of sawdust from a cabinet maker.
i use it as mulch, and will pour fish emulsion on it.
bacteria/fungi attack it, and release nutrients.
the stuff disappears in months in the heat.
i often mix it with grass clippings and coffee grounds.

Sawdust is perfect to use after it is composted. Mix it with grass cuttings it will turn dark brown in three months then it's safe to mix it in soil.
