yellow Burmese Grapes (B.ramiflora) in closeup
« on: December 20, 2012, 06:06:27 PM »

I showed yellow burmese grapes before but here is a close-up so they are easy to identify.Regardless of skin color the seeds have a purple film over them. This variety is the same size as small rambais and is almost as good in quality. You eat them like jaboticaba squeezing out of the skin and swallowing flesh and seeds together.

Very cool looking fruit, almost like a cluster of garcinias.  The taste sounds nice too.

thanks for the closeup.

Ethan I just ate a heap and these are darn good ones.I sent some seeds around a couple of weeks ago of this type. The flavor is citrusy, with lychee, jaboticaba and grape in there. This is a better cv than many other burmese grapes I have tried and are officially delicious out of the fridge chilled.A male and female tree is needed but they are more cold tolerant than their cousins the rambai.

Looks delicious Mike; how is the taste compared to B. dulcis and B. motleyana  ?

Soren I reckon good rambai is better than good burmese grapes but there are excellent and average varieties of both. These yellow burmese grapes are a great fruit but a large kind of rambai I was eating in april to june was even better tasting.Tampoi is probably on par and sometimes even better than these 2.B.racemosa is not quite as good and angled tampoi perhaps a little behind the best of the top 3 in the genus.I have not eaten B.dulcis but infer that is not quite as good as the other species I have mentioned.

Howdy Mike,
Them Burmese Grapes look truly amazing and very exotic 8) Are they planted commercially in your neck of the woods or are they just a back yard tree?

Thanks a bunch for sharing, mate :)

Steven none in this genus are not grown commercially here but most tropical fruit farms have them. The keeping qualities are not good enough for transport without getting marks or staying fresh for long periods. They do feed them to the toursts.
