Title: Cherimoya Season 2019 (So Cal)
Post by: behlgarden on October 29, 2019, 06:04:53 PM
Well, we are there folks, Cherimoya in my yard are sizing up, some trees are behind others, but I expect small crop enough to taste, not a bumper crop given every year I get burned out fruits due to intense heat waves, plus I did not have enough time to pollinate them. I got Nata, Sabor, Helmut, Orton, Pierce, Campas, Campus, Behl, Deliciousa fruited. All others either burned out or dropped.

now with heat waves gone, cold temps on cards are excellent for Anona sizing up and sweetness. just pray we dont get rain for another 6 weeks, otherwise with cold temp and rain, fruits would split.

how is your garden looking for Anonas?

Behl, I picked a couple knights over the weekend.  Had one today, was nice 26brix, it has a great flavor and not too many  seeds.  This is the first year my trees are making a good crop.

Awesome Brad, love when you get good variety with fewer seeds. Early anonas are always not up to par. I cant wait for Helmut, sabor, pierce, and Behl from my yard, these are always exceptional.

My fruit are sizing up finally, they were growing and then stayed about the same size for about 6 weeks and are now starting to grow again. I didn’t think as much as I was planning to so I think my fruit may be smaller this year.

I must have picked Big Sister too early, it was only average, and had some grit.
It was large and beginning to yellow. I will begin shaking the fruit.

10 or so fruits have ripened up now with more that need to be picked.  Some of them had fallen off the tree and the stem pulled out.  But they were perfectly ripe.  Todays was super good with brix of 26 and tropical bubble gum flavor.  Also tastes like a white sugar tropical version of sapodilla.  Similar sweetness level and texture with more acid and tropical flavor.  Thats the best description I can come up for someone who hasnt had them before.

I like to cut it like this and de seed it so the seeds dont slow down the indulgence.

Honeyharts and knight.  Although now I am questioning the knight variety.  It looks the same as honeyhart and is earlier than the other trees.  Chaffey and fino de jete are almost ready then dr whites will take longer it looks like.  Im really liking the knight and honeyhart fruits.  They are consistently 25+ brix, juicy, strong flavor, fairly low to reasonable seed count.  Both trees are vigorous and produced a lot of fruit.  I had some other lavern trees mislabeled so Im thinking the knight is maybe actually a honeyhart.  It is smoother exterior than pierce. Looks just like the honeyhart fruits.

This year, the rats found my cherimoya.  They ate almost all of my fruits and a lot of them are immature.  I manage to kill a couple rats.  I am very disappointed because i was going to send them out to some friends.   >:(   Lucky i picked my big El Bumpo cherimoya before they started eating them.  The strangest part, they have not touch my african pride or others atemoya.  There is also a video of me eating my almost 4 lbs el Bumpo.

This knight was beautiful but not ready.  I had to cut down because a rat was eating it.  Flavor is excellent but gad a lot of grit.  I am sure it will taste better if i let it sit longer.

Deliciosa was a bomb of explosion of flavor and chew.  My wife likes the chewy part.  Rate took a bit out of both fruits and the fruit was tiny.

About 2 years ago, i asked Steve from exotica for a cherimoya that taste like a Vietnamese sugar apple.   He went to his green house and gave me an 8 inches seedlings for $20.   He said I will enjoy it and it tastes great when he ate it before planting the seeds and i won’t regret it.

Now it fruited and i had to pick the fruit early because the rats have been eating my cherimoya.  The fruit are about the size of a lemon or small orange.   It did not get bigger like my atemoya graft on it.

My first bite, it was like my mouth knew the flavors.  It did not taste like a cherimoya, it lacks the acid and banana/pineapple flavors of a typical cherimoya.  It was chewy like a Dai Na and not too sweet.  It taste like a sugar apple with guava flavors.  There is a resin after taste like the resin of an unripe guava that is pick too early and force to ripe.  The flesh around the seed was more chewy then the firm texture of the fruit.  It was meaty and custard.  It have no overly sweet taste of a cherimoya/sugar apple.  It peels like a sugar apple and have no gritty taste.

Overall, this is a must have and it provide a different flavor profile to my annonas collection.

I had two Shlome (I think that is how its spelled) drop, these are must have and I rate them as good as Pierce, and with fewer seeds. seeds were dark black, total 10 seeds in 12 oz fruit which is amazing. had flavor profile of banana vannila custard with decent acidity, brix was 29. I forgot to take pic, will do so on the next one

I have one very small fruit on my Geffner, and four on my Knight (I think one is cross pollinated with atemoya pollen). One is of good size, maybe a pound, the rest pretty small (like lime sized). No issues with pests, I bagged all of them with the little jewelry bags.

Hoping next weeks' cooling doesn't harm their progress. Going to drag the trees in their pots under the deck for the coldest part of the week.

Shalom cherimoya is in GRIN and it’s not top tier. I’ve had report that it fruits in Miami but I have not been able to confirm it. Steve mislabel that var it’s probably Best or Helmet in Exotica.

Finally sampled a real cherimoya.

Received a Honeyhart from an anonymous annonaholic in Cali.

So much better than I expected. Immediately walloped with a wave of intense flavor. Very sweet, complex, creamy, with just enough tang. Forgot about all the crazy stuff going on in the world for a few moments, then zipped off to work wishing I had brought the rest of it with me.

My wife, who usually only eats mangoes, polished it off when she found it in the fridge. She won't eat guanabana, sugar apple, rollinia; even a really good custard apple was just meh to her. But she loved the moya.

Gonna need more of these. Much more.

Joe sorry we didnt take many pics.  Priya has some pics of the cut up fruit.  If she is out there maybe she can add them.  Weather was perfect, we had breakfast then ate a bunch of fruit.  Everyone brought something to share.  Honeyhart was my favorite cherimoya.  A few people liked the fino de jete which was less sweet.  I havent had enough of them to pass judgement.  Ive got some more new types still hanging on the trees.  Ill post back when I try those.

Thanks for the invite Brad, my friend and I both had a blast. The Cherimoyas at your place are awesome! Something about your soil and your fertilizer routine is making them come out extra tasty.

Most the Cherimoyas I tested came out with a Brix around 25%. The Cherimoyas are so sweet, it’s difficult to eat more than a pound or two. It was nice that everyone brought some home grown fruit, Honey, wine and preserves. The Passionfruit curd spread was awesome on the Avocado toast.

Although now I am questioning the knight variety.  It looks the same as honeyhart and is earlier than the other trees.
...I had some other lavern trees mislabeled so Im thinking the knight is maybe actually a honeyhart.

[Begin rant]
La Verne is bad news.  I got my "El Bumpo" tree from Lowes 3 years ago.  A friend in the CRFG told me recently that La Verne is their supplier.  After 3 years in the ground I got the first fruit and it's definitely not El Bumpo.   >:(
Bad business.  Now I don't know what I have, so I also don't know what to graft onto it (except El Bumpo), because [again] I don't know what I have!

The least they could do is be honest and say "We put labels on our plants, but they don't really mean anything."  I shouldn't be paying $36 and investing 3 years on some mystery tree.
[End rant]

Thanks for that info, spaugh.  Now I at least have a possible alias for the suspect in custody.  This will be my only cherimoya tree, and I plan to make it into a multi-graft tree anyway; but to do that I still need to identify each branch's variety.

Nice fruit! and thanks again Brad.

I don't think its a local vs. whatever issue. I've got at least 3 trees from 2 different local nurseries that i'm pretty sure aren't as labelled. I don't think honesty or care track with size.

I got 2 of the bunk bumpos.  They are dr whites.  I agree it sucks and bad biz.  Im going to top work one of mine to a real bumpo.  Bow you got a big tree, start grafting it up.

Thanks for that info, spaugh.  Now I at least have a possible alias for the suspect in custody.  This will be my only cherimoya tree, and I plan to make it into a multi-graft tree anyway; but to do that I still need to identify each branch's variety.

You should post a pic of your fruit so we can maybe ID it.

I just ate the best fruit I have ever tasted. It appeared to be a cherimoya, probably Pierce.

Conical, Laevis-type, with few seeds, and chewy, guanabana flavored flesh. No grit, even towards the skin.

Could anyone help identify my laverne trees?

This is the alleged "Chaffey" cherimoya

This is the alleged "El Bumpo" Cherimoya. This one is clearly something else.

Behigarden, Thank you for this topic. I noticed you enjoyed sabor ? Please look my topic (often on top of list because i now add photos every day). I put some photos of sabor but maybe thé graft here failed and it gives fruits from a very bad rootstock ? My fruit IS very little, hard and No taste....

Hey Behl or Frank or anyone else with an atemoya when do you pick them in Southern CA?  I tried an african pride a month ago that wasn't ripe yet.  They are still hanging there.  Not sure when to pick.

Last summer weather was cool so Atemoya are taking a long time to mature.
My African Pride that were pollinated last June are ready.
My other AP that were pollinated last July are not ready.

The year before my AP were ready by Christmas.

AP with light green skin and a little yellow tint are ready.

This is how they looked a month ago.  Will check them again soon and see if they look better.

So far I havent been impressed with the fruits but Im waiting for the 10 or so on there now to get really ripe before making a decision on top working the AP tree.  It has some kind of off taste I really dont care for.  I'll probably switch it over to cherimoya unless these ones are much improved.

Hi Brad
I’ve been jumping from Yucatán to OC this winter and can only say last year I sold over 800lb of anonas to less than 100lb this season. Most of my anonas have either split or dropped due to the early rains and the low temps. My strategy for next season is prune early and hand pollinate by May.

Brad,

I’ve not detected off taste from mature AP.
Let your AP hang as long as possible.
Eat them in Spring.
Compare them to fruits from other trees.
Then decide if they deserve a spot or 2.

For AP only,

prune in July. Pollinate in August.
Immature AP fruits won’t split over winter.
You get 1.5 lb fruits and a few 2 lb fruits in Spring.

Brad, thanks for your post about AP ripening time. I have been wondering the same for a couple of months now.

Seanny, good to learn about the color indicator for ripeness check.

I have not tasted AP before, and am looking forward to the first set of fruits from my tree. Here is a collage of pictures of a few fruits hanging on the tree. At first glance they do not look like the AP pictures shared. The tree was labeled AP at the nursery. If it matters I did not hand pollinate these fruits.

Here is an unnamed cherimoya fruit, from a tree purchased via Craigslist. The fruit tastes good and has a good flavor. Can someone help me identify the variety? Thanks for any pointers.

Color transition to harvest is about 2 months.
Tag it then cut 2 months later.

Brad, good to know about the AP from atkins. I bought mine from them as well.

Seanny, I may need to forget about these AP fruits and visit them back in April/May :) I picked one of the fruits for ripening, but instead it just turned black, and shriveled/dried.

I am hoping to improve my cherimoya/AP tree management routines for the upcoming season - can someone share their insights about what works well for them. I am based in San Diego inland area, any specifics for the region is always helpful. Thanks in advance.

They dont seem to require a lot of attention.  My routine is spring pruning and defoliation in late february and march. Then leaf stripping late spring once they are flushing good. (strip leaves inside the canopy on larger branches to form flowers inside the tree on strong limbs).  And pollinating in May and June.  Then trim again mid summer to reduce height.

Heavy mulch once a year in spring.  Then fertilize 3 or 4 times between now and december.  I just use avocado fertilizer and gypsum.

Good luck, stop by some time if you want to poke around again.  Im working on 2 new virgin acres of hillside here to ve filled with avocado cherimoya and dragonfruit.

Brad, thanks a bunch for the info. Definitely helpful in getting my notes started (shared below). Can already see some minor omissions on my part based on your practices. Probably the other factor could be that I was not using viable pollen and/or not pollinating correctly. In how many weeks/months are the cherimoyas pollinated in may/june ready for eating? :)

I will take you up on the offer. Look forward to seeing your new acreage.

They take around 6 months to be ready to pick.  I am just doing what I learned from others here.  Behl and Frank and Simon had given me the info on how to care for them.  One important thing to note is when pruning you need to strip the leaves where you want new branches or flowers to form.  Nothing will grow from that node unless you remove the leaf.  Simon clued me in on pollinating only flowers inside the canopy on big branches.  Dont set fruit way out where it will droop or get sunburned or be small from inadequate branch size.

Gefner atemoya needs 210 warm days from pruning to harvesting.
Last summer was cool so 7 months wasn't enough.

I've picked hundreds of African Prides at a friends farm, we get them when they have a bit of yellow, and have a sticky feel to the skin.

Just harvested some Cherimoya from one of my seedling trees today.  They come in all shapes in sizes.  I'm not sure how anyone could identify one variety from another when the fruit shape and surface texture is so variable.
