I bought this from the Mai Vang bonsai guy in Sarasota, FL a couple months back for $35. Has a 1 inch trunk. Is there any way of guestimating it's approximate age. 8)
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Size and age will correlate differently depending on variety. Do you know what kind of jabo you bought?
-
Nope... there was a bit of a language barrier. I think it's common red.
-
Jabos grow slow, red hybrid grows a little faster.
Hard to say, would guess your tree is 4 to 6 years old.
And welcome to the forum! =)

I was going to guess 6-8 years.
I have a 3 footer that is 4 years old 1/2" caliper or less and it's fruiting, yours is definitely much older by the look of the growth.
That's a hell of a deal for 35 bucks.

Thank you Rob and Waxy. When I bought it I thought it might be mid bonsai or maybe at one point they were training it as a bonsai. It seems like it's thicker than it should be for its height, compared to others I've seen, at least in my head. Also seems to grow more sideways rather than vertical, not sure how to better describe that. Perhaps it's a bonsai reject, which im more than happy to have. You guys would be blown away by the older Jabo bonsai's, and just some of his older Bonsai trees in general. I'll get pictures next time.

it looks like Sabara to me? smaller leaves
I have two in my yard in the ground and last year I started giving one
Epsoma Holly tone and lots of water and it looks the best it has ever looked?
The second one I recently planted and gave it the same holly tone and it
immediately started to flush. Now that it may cool down it may not do much but
first of February I plan to hit them with more holly tone.

Thats a decent price. Mind sharing where you bought it at?

I get the impression that this was a one off deal, but this is their website...

They grow faster her than I had thought based on all I had read. This sabara is about 3 years in the ground and maybe 2-3 years in a pot?
Flowering for the first time this year.

That's insane growth, we have only 5-6 months of growing season here in the Bay.
What happened to all of the bark? Did you rub them off or did it grow so fast that it didn't show any signs?

It just peeled recently if that’s what you mean? goes all patterned for a bit and then falls off by itself. You can see some caught in the branch crotches.
