Identifying Coconut Cream and Mahachanok Mango
« on: June 27, 2016, 03:17:17 PM »
Grafted some scions to a neighbor's stump.  I may have mixed up the scions.  Does anyone have pics of the two mangos in question?

Thanks!

I agree, foliage will help.

But the way my plants are behaving: CC tends to be a very green leaf (bright green/yellow when young) and somewhat wide for a mango leaf. Whereas Mahachanok tends to be a thinner leaf with a distinct red hue. It also tends to have bright green veins when a young leaf.

However, mine have not fruited yet, so I might not have the right IDs on my plants :)

Leaf sap smell is also a distinctive indicator. Coco cream sap smells citrussy, while the Mahachanok has the classic indo-chinese / Duncan smell (I call it coca cola). Smell is strongest where the petiole meets the branch tip. Snap a leaf off at the petiole and smell.

Here are my 2 Mahachanoks.  One is tall and one turned out bushy (it was stunted due to a weed whacker incident). Sorry it flipped my pictures.

Foliage?

oops. yes. foliage

Everyone thanks for the photos!

I have noticed that the new flush of leaves on this scion have this brown/copper color.  while the leaves coming out from the other branches (common mango I assume) is reddish in tinge.

went over to neighbor's today and got a better look of the flush.  not sure this is enough to go off of.  however, I will do the smell test!

Mahachanok leaves are veri distinct looking.  If you post pictures of the two different grafts it should be easy.

As for the Coconut Cream,  the growth habit of the branches is very much undulating. It is also fairly vigorous.

Looks like Coco. MC leaves from emergance to maturity is almost always straight, pointy and taut with no curls or waves.

I wish I could say I have more pics. But this is it.  Still working on my grafting skills.  This is the only one that made it.

Again, thank you to everyone for the input!

Reviving old post because having a similar issue. Bought a mahachanok tree last year from Excalibur and don’t know why but when I got Home I had this gut feeling it was mislabeled. Tree didn’t have tag only pot said it was a mahachanok. Tree branches grow iratic and curved and point downward. Leaves are large and curvy. Today was smelling sap and smells citrusy/lemony. So I’m starting to think my gut feeing was right. Wonder what it could be coconut cream/? Here is a pic of tree.

Probably Lemon Zest or Lemon Meringue (PPK).

My coconut creams branches grew downward also. My lemon zest and lemon meringue grow at about 45 degree angles.

I guess I’ll have to wait and see I have a lemon zest and don’t think it grows curved like that. That’s what made me think coconut cream. I guess only time will tell. But I guess it’s safe to say it’s not mahachanok.

I have th CC cream and the lemon zest, my CC grows more horizontal than vertical, I agree with the person above that said they may guess the vertical tree looks like a lemon zest, it looks identical to mine.

Yes it tends to grow horizontal and downwards so maybe it is CC.

For years I visited certain members who had no labels on trees and knew which was which at a glance.  I was amazed.  While I haven't yet matched their aptitude, I have found it happening lots in the last few years...
