Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Restoring a 30+ year old avocado orchard
« on: October 12, 2022, 05:37:20 PM »
A really beautiful orchard, Janet!

It is truly amazing to see how resilient old trees, esp. old fruit trees are.

Thank you for sharing the photos. It is really inspiring. Some of the trees have their own stories to tell. I can only imagine how daunting the task of pruning will be, but I am certain, slowly but surely, you will get it all done one beautiful tree limb at a time.

I agree with your Husband that this is a lifetime project. But one that comes with deep fulfillment. I wish you and your family the very best of luck on this great adventure! I look forward to learning alongside you, and to seeing your progress and updates as you move along, and seeing you succeed!

Beautiful!!

I enjoy seeing the variations in the two fruitlets and in the leaves. I like the subtle specks of color on the leaves. Your hard work hand pollinating and growing this species on your farm is definitely showing results! Beautiful photos!

Ilama is one species that is truly diverse, having a wide range of phenotypes... They are fascinating.
I wonder sometimes that the ilamas seen thus far are just a scratch on the surface in comparison to the true extent of the diversity of this species in its native range.

Thank you for sharing the photos.
I look forward to seeing an update...

Thanks for the advice! I wanted to try it on a watermelon that is not doing particularly well. It is growing, but very very slow and thought the extra root system might help. I changed the soil out mid summer, and the root system is very weak.
I've tried approach graft with mango rootstock, but never tried it on jaboticaba. Yes, mango is much easier to work with, and though I've been successful with cleft grafts on plinias, the approach graft on very small scions might be tricky. I'll let you know how it goes, thank you!

Nice video Shiloh! I haven't tried approach grafting with Plinias, but you have me wanting to give it a go! I hope the escarlate seedling makes it. It's such a pretty variegation! I look forward to seeing the update on how it does.
Thank you for the detailed video. Good Luck!

Looks like it's a Cutnut tree - Barringtonia sp.

I'm not sure which species...maybe Barringtonia edulis?
The flowers and leaves remind me of it. Also called yum yum tree.

Just sent payment.
Thank you so much!

Sorry to hear that Chandramohan! You might be able to graft it over when you get a chance!
I do hope the seedlings I shared come true! How are they doing so far?

Looks like a Datura plant...Datura stramonium.
It's also known as Jimson weed, Thorn apple, or devil's snare etc.
It's in the night shade family.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mulberries not setting fruit
« on: April 30, 2019, 12:55:15 PM »
Have your Pakistani trees ever produced fruit? Those catkins maybe the fruit, which is trying to set on the 2 trees, but dropping due to lack of irrigation. They may also benefit from some fertilizer if you haven't added that already. A photo will help ID if they are male or female flowers when you get the chance.
I'm near Richmond, SW Houston, and am growing a few Pakistani's, and 6 other mulberry varieties. Mulberries are drought tolerant trees, but while they are fruiting they do benefit from regular irrigation.
Sounds good! Keep an eye on the trees, and you can always graft onto the non-fruiting branches in the future if you like.

Looks like a native Pawpaw, an Asimina species.

How big is the bush and do you have photos of the flower? It may help to ID which species it is.

:) Ah no problem...I'm happy I could help.

Yes, that's the common names. Is it still flowering? It is just the first flowering and still young, so hopefully it will set fruit the next season. The owner may look at it differently now that he knows he has a very special tree, one that he can use to make "Tejate" or the "Drink of the Gods!"

All the best..:)

Were you able to find the ID of this plant?

I think it might be Quararibea funebris! (If I am correctly identifying it from the flower.)
It's a South American native with a really fragrant flower that is used as a spice to flavor a corn-cacao drink.

For those who have Annona crassiflora seedling originated from my seeds, I would like to reinforce the guidance: transplant your seedlings for tall pots (aerial part of plant = 10 cm, use pots with 40 cm tall, or bigger)
Thanks to Zambezi for this very beatiful and illustrative picture about this issue.

I hope someday to visit marolo trees outside Brazil originated from my seeds. 8)

:) You're welcome.

It shows that these seeds need very deep pots, and it may also explain why it take so long for it to sprout above ground, as it is spending so much energy developing a strong root system first. Also they don't like wet feet, so place in the best draining soil possible. I hope this helps more growers succeed with this annona! I'd love to hear what others have learnt about this annona.

Hehe, hopefully you'll have lots of places to visit!... ;)
