I put 4 citrus and one olive tree in the ground last spring. I have been researching for about 2 years on how to get them to survive a winter by using 100 watts of electricity (a string of Christmas LIghts) along with plastic, styrofoam and wood chips. I am actually having a problem with them being to warm. Last night it was 16 degrees and inside my set up it was 62 degrees...as you look at my photo the trees are actually 2 feet below the level of the plastic. i planted them 1 foot below ground level and added 1 foot of wood chips. At 10 cents a kilowatt hr...my lights are running at 100 watts an hour.  So basically 1 cent an hour to heat my setup

Citrus General Discussion / Re: moving 9 ft fukushu tree.
« on: January 15, 2024, 10:07:18 AM »
If the fruits turn out to taste good it may go inground.  I have 2 of them to replace the 2 seed grown Fukushu trees.

Tree is 28 months old from T-Bud growth start.  The tree above is 1 year older.  I was amazed how much faster the tree grow on Flying dragon than own roots.

Good idea. I grafted a top level bud to a flying dragon rootstock seedling.  The leaf color is much better and it flowers much better.

After a 10F night I had to move my inground Fukushu tree from the cold hardy citrus group to this group.  I will probably have to move it this spring to the morgue.

Meiwa and Fukushu yes.  Nagami and Marumi no.  others ?????
Someone threw a Nagami seed in the ocean and the result was admiral Nelson escapes only to see the plant monster destroy his submarine.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Creating a new citrus chimera like Prague Citsuma
« on: January 06, 2024, 12:17:55 AM »
Early ripening is probably going to be important in the selection criteria. A hardy chimera that ripens in February needs just as much protection as a non hardy citrus.
If the fruit is frosted severely at least the tree survives if it is cold hardy.  No sense in growing hardy trees that loose all fruit every year.

My valentine was on US897 not US987 that I stated above.  The tree was well developed about 6 feet very well branched.

If you mean Cocktailpomelo, this is a very good pomelo.
For me only Valentinepomelo and
Tarocco Oranges are still better citrus.
My Valentine on US987 roots died while producing its first fruit.  I felt so much better after reading so many arcticals of how mediocre its fruits were.  Your statement of excellence just ruined my whole lif.  LOLOL

I wish you a lot of good luck on this.  Your listing states 6b/7a.  Is this the 2023 update.  I used to be 6a/6b but I am now a solid 6b as of 2023.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Ways to protect your citrus trees in ground
« on: December 09, 2023, 12:02:59 PM »
Do you have some type of heat in there?   Also a strategy.....I was thinking about wrapping a tree in christmas lights then surround straw or leaves next and possibly styrofoam, bubble wrap  or frost cloth on the outside on nights that get below 20 degrees.  Anyones thoughts on the order of application?

Mike Adams
I have to add heat when outside temperature of less than 20F.  My currant Greenhouse will have a thermal outlet that turns on at 35F and off at 45F.  I will have a used Microwave fan plugged in to blow air from my unheated basement into the GH for heat.  My newest pictures.

My setup has,  for good insulation 4 layers of glass.

72
Just a few and that is about 1/3 of it's total production.  I get the same volume of one "cutie" mandarin.  My lemon tree of the same size produced 74 lemons in 1 year for a total weight of 60 pounds.

cold protection here

Left side of greenhouse.

Right side of GH
Greenhouse is 4 layers of glass thick.

9 year old Fukushu left out of green house for failure to fruit.  9 feet tall 5 foot diameter heavily branched.

How would you describe the taste difference between a Marumi and Nagami kumquat
