Is this mango tree sick?
« on: November 13, 2015, 03:47:09 PM »
I have a Cogshall that has been in ground for about 6 years, and is about 15 feet tall.  Been a sporadic producer during this time.  This past season she produced only about two dozen fruits; the summer before about 70.
I've been watching as one side of the tree seems to be losing leaves and some branches are completely bare, looking as if the branch is dying or dead.  Don't know if these pictures are helpful, but what you think?

Looks like very minor but normal die back on less vigorous branches to me (decreased direct light expose due to top canopy shading can cause this as well). The rest of the tree that can be seen in the photos looks healthy and green. 2cents.

Thanks, Robbie.  I should add that the branches affected are all interior and on the east side of the tree, receiving little sun due to a large Tropical Almond tree in a neighbor's yard.

As a follow up I wanted to post a few photos because I don't like the way this tree is looking.  A number of branches have lost every leaf and are completely dry.  You can see in one photo that I was able to snap one entire branch off with little effort.  It was like kindling wood.  Legitimate concerns?

I think it looks fine and normal.

I think it is normal, that the inner branches, with less light, end up dry! You just need to remove them and maybe prune some others, to allow more light to get in, and it should be fine.

Like others have said, pretty normal for a mature tree. It does appear, however, that you have a sooty mold problem :) .

Hehe.  Indeed, I do.  Sooty mold, scale, and I seemingly have a long term friendship. . .

I too find myself dealing with scale/sooty mold from time to time, especially the trees that do not get as much sun as needed  :-\...out of my control. When I planted the trees it was getting enough sun, then the neighbors Oak trees "grew up" and covered my tree  **sigh**...
