It's pretty much been decided that I am getting a trip to Miami for my birthday. When would be the best time of year to go? I'm not really comfortable with giving out the month of my birthday, but suffice to say that not much fruit would be in season...

No one is going to steal your identity or do anything to you from knowing your birth month on the internet.

As BSBullie asked, the best month for fruit all depends on what fruit you are interested in.

For the most part, I would just want to go when the most fruit would be in season, but some specifics would be caimito ( of course ), soursop, and some different Garcinias (specifically G. Mangostana, G. Prainiana, and G. intermedia). Does anybody in Miami sell Quararibea cordata/chupa chupa? I thought I had heard that they were illegal but I'm not sure.

Most fruit are available in the Summer.

Star apples (caimito) are usually available around March.

Soursop can usually be found at various times throughout the year but it is usually imported from the Caribbean.

It will be very unlikely for you to find mangosteen or cherapu fruit in FL. If you do find mangosteen it will be imported from Thailand or something. A few people have intermedia growing in their yards. Harry has one with tons of fruit.

You will probably not find any chupa chupa fruit as well.

Yumberry? Acerola? Marang? Chempedak? Any of those available?

Only Acerola from that list.

I am not sure if anyone has fruited marang in FL. Chempedak has been fruited but its very rare. Never seen a fruiting yumberry tree here.

FL isn't tropical enough for many of the fruits you are looking for. There have been growers who have been able to fruit almost everything you've mentioned but those are usually on the islands on the coast of FL.

From my experience, living most of my life in SFLA, the best time for the most tropical fruits s in SFLA are the hottest months, July to September. During these months you can find Mangos, Abiu, Mamey, Annonas, Jakfruit, Avocados, Dragonfruit and many others. I am sure others in this Forum will find fault with my timeline, but this is the time that Fairchild has chosen for their MangoFest and when the Fruit Conference is held. The reason they choose this time is that it's peak season for many things. Now weather can play a factor in the ripening or availability of things so it's good to check before you book if you are looking for something in particular. My 2 cents!

Yumberry?  You'll need to plan a vacation to China!  The Miami area has lots of wonderful fruits available from around May on.  It's very unfortunate that the main mango season doesn't mingle more with the lychee season.  Some of the other fruit mentioned can be found in Hawaii or another tropical country.  Sad but true.  Still lots of great places to visit in Florida and I think it would be a kick-ass birthday present to yourself.

Ok I'll ask one more thing and leave this topic alone. Anybody got grumichama?

You will find plenty of Grumichama in Miami.  Plants and probably fruit too.

I would suggest going during first week of July when you can attend the Fairchild mango festival, eat lots of mangos and many other fruits in season, and probably meet a lot of the other members on this forum.
I forget now if there will be a fruit conference this year or not? I believe it's biannual, and last year none, so i guess it's on this year? If so it has a lot of field trips as will as speakers.

You are correct. There is a Tropical Fruit Conference scheduled for mid-July and the details are being worked out. Yes, it will be hot & humid but there will be plenty of fruits to eat and lots to do.

I think whenever you decide to come you are going to find more common stuff than what you seem to be looking for. Mangoes, Lychees, Jackfruit, starfruit, avocado's, Mameys... Stuff like that. You won't find any really rare stuff for sale. Best bet for rarer stuff is if you can meet up with a hobbiest that grows them. A lot of the stuff on your list just isn't grown in FL. From your last list you may find Jaboticaba. That is probably it.

See earlier comments.  You are looking for the holy grails of fruit.  Just ain't gonna happen in Miami.  You might try contacting Frankies in Hawaii and possibly Bryan Brunner in PR for some of these plants.  Excalibur in Florida may have some harder to find items and even some rare items...getting them to sell them is another hurdle.  Regardless...you will have a great time in Miami and will get to see and eat some fine fruit.

I think have a misconception of the fruit that is available for sale in SFla...you may want to plan your trip for Puerto Rico or Thailand.

You have to be in right place at right time in somebody's yard to get dem grumichamas. It's not a crop that's grown commercially in Florida or anywhere else that i know of. I think once you get to Florida you will wake up to the reality of the situation. If you really really want to get dem grumichamas, your best bet would be to connect to somebody here growing them willing to express mail some to you when they come into season. It's a very perishable fruit but it is possible to ship if done in timely way and packed right.

Great!  You should be in prime mango/lychee season.  Now hope for no hurricanes or tropical storms.

Yay!! We may have to swing by your place if you can accommodate us! We'll still call ahead of course. ;)

Your family is more than welcome to stop by.  Be prepared to eat lots of mango! As the time gets closer, we can figure out a day and time that works best.  How long will you be in town?
